why is this being nominated both for Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Film?

Since when are non-English-language films even nominated??

The "best original screenplay" nomination is even more ludicrous - how exactly are they even evaluating it, based on the translation??

reply

Because it would be racist to not nominate it for best picture.

reply

How so? It's already nominated for best foreign language film, which I am sure it will win.

Such silliness.

Big dumb.

It has happened a number of tones over the years - since 2000 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Amour have been nominated for Best Picture. Like animated films and documentaries, any film screened for a week in an LA cinema is eligible.

Non-English language films also begin with scripts so the original screenplay nomination is fully justified for a clever, genre-twisting script. Quite a few foreign language films have been nominated for writing and a handful have won (most recently Talk to Her from 2002).

It was one of the best movies of the year. It shouldn’t win, but it definitely deserves the nomination. There’s no rule saying a foreign film can’t be nominated for Best Picture, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

reply

Cuz it’s da bomb!

reply

To hint other Foreign language film nominees that Parasite is going to be the winner

reply

Yes, that's an explanation I can buy.

reply

Because it qualified for both awards and it was a damned good film.

Honestly, foreign films is where it’s at, most specifically Korean films. It’s good to see their work recognized, but I don’t think they’ll win Best Picture, unless Hollywood’s feeling generous or wants to make history. I feel like if a foreign movie wins this year they’re opening the gates for foreign movies to win every year since Hollywood’s not really coming up with the goods lately, and as someone mentioned maybe Hollywood’s too nationalistic for that to happen. So, at most, Best Foreign film...also because I’m seeing the narrative that it’s Quentin’s year to bag awards. I prefer Parasite over OUATIH though.
