Nolan doesn't knows how to write compelling characters

None of the characters in his film feel real. They are just...there and too often he falls into the trap of making them do too much exposition. In Inception for example the characters spend about 90% of the time explaining how things works for the audience. This leads to his character lacking heart, his movies are all brains and no soul.

Yo why everybody keeps saying “I felt no connection”... “I wanted emotions” etc

How much emotions u felt when watching 60’s/70’s Bond movies... how about ‘2001 a space odyssey’

Nolan takes inspiration from these kinda of movies... his characters are cold & cerebral... its all about the plot... its all about entertainment

Could NOT agree more. Everyone has been dumbed down by fake reality TV, thinking everything must be these cry baby human drama things. It's just a movie, not therapy.

reply

He very much does, just for some reason he didn't in his last two movies. And he seriously needs to quit casting Kenneth Branagh.

reply

He doesn't.
Branagh was good, he worked with the material he had.

Nolan has zero subtlety. He seems to be too focused on having main characters with too much style, but empty inside.

Ellen Page's character in Inception was ridiculous, she was just there so that people would explain to her what was happening.
Why can't Nolan show us with images and throughout the movie what's happening?
In Tenet he had: action sequence number 1 - exposition of plot number 1 - action sequence number 2 - exposition of plot number 2. It was always like that. Either full out action, or full out exposition.

Lenny was a great character as were Teddy, Bruce Wayne, Ras al Ghul, Angier, Borden, The Joker, Harvey Dent, James Gordon, Cobb, Bane, Selina, Miranda Tate, Blake, Cooper, Murph etc. just starting with Dunkirk it seems like he just stopped writing great characters and focused on the spectacle. Branagh is not a good actor, one thing I didn’t like about Dunkirk was that he was basically there to say “home” as many times as possible. I didn’t buy him as a Russian arms dealer either. It’s not Nolan’s fault, Branagh just can’t act

reply

i agree about branagh. not believable as a russian.

reply

Exactly and there just wasn’t a lot of depth to his character
