why do they have to keep doing that? the men are prettier than the women these days, and no, i'm not gay.

there's lots of attractive young women out there, why don't they throw them in a movie some time.

in braveheart, the women were beautiful. but that's been years.

in rob roy, you had jessica lange, who was fetching in her own way.

let her be 20th century assertive, right off the bat. but at least let her be good looking while doing it.

It has become more and more common. The shows aren't good enough for a plain looking cast of women to carry it either.

maybe its women & gay men dominating the casting decisions.

maybe its by design to please women by not threatening them with good-looking lead female actors

there has to be a reason for it, but whatever that reason is, there are two of us at least who don't like them, whatever they may be.

Could be, most TV shows and films now are made to appeal to a female demographic so they can't have hot chicks anymore. I noticed the same with the Charmed remake, new Sabrina is a plain jane as well, a lot of the time they want us to believe these women are "hot" and I think that just makes it worse.

She doesn't look like a supermodel but is there need for her to be? She has perfectly pleasant " girl next door" looks and frankly would likely be considered an exceptional beauty compared to what the women generally looked like in those times, the vast majority whom would likely be considered total dogs by today's standards.

And the OP mentioned Braveheart.....I don’t think the Scottish Queen looked all that different than William Wallace’s wife in Braveheart.

That is indeed ironic when you could certainly argue that Catherine Mccormick was in fact more "plain". I was surprised when I found out she was only in her early 20s in that film (she looked 30-ish to me). While not bad looking she certainly has a more mature face.

McCormack has definitely looked 10 years older than her actual age throughout the years. If you watch her in 28 Weeks Later she plays Robert Carlysle's wife and she looks like she's the same age as him (late 40s) even though she was only 35.

mhairi calvey & sophie marceau - compare & contrast w/ queen plain jane

its a question of taste, i suppose. mine is better than yours.

Mhairi Calvey was a child in Braveheart so it's kind of weird to throw her in the mix. While I agree that Sophie was quite attractive in Braveheart you did generalize about the "women" not "woman" in Braveheart and besides Sophie there was just the 24 year old who looked 34 and her 6 year old counterpart.

my bad. haven't seen the film in decades. SM is the one who I found most striking. was there a single striking-looking woman in this version? and why would i desire these? because i'm a man who enjoys a view of strinking-looking woman, all things being equal.

its all a bunch of pseudo-historical bilge anyway, lets have a good time.

jriley....all due respect, the actress who played the Queen was striking. Those big, beautiful eyes. Those cheeckbones and lips. Not to mention, her strength made her even MORE sexy. She...was....HOT.
But I suppose opinions vary.

that's cool. these sorts of things are always matters of taste.

speaking of which it is always interesting, to me at least, how various our tastes prove to be.

i'm not, for that matter, saying she's ugly.

going back to before any of us were born, though, how many would argue that rita hayworth or jeanne crain or ann sheridan or jean simmons were plain?

i'm going to wager that most women would not consider the male lead was similarly ordinary looking, acknowledging that you personally may differ in your assessment of her attractiveness - as i dont think yours would be the majority opinion.

If you are referring to Florence Pugh, who played Robert's wife Elizabeth, I think she is quite beautiful, and an excellent actress.
Elegant, graceful, intelligent ... and I am sucker for redheads.

Agree. I thought she was quite striking in this movie. And her strength was very appealing. She did an excellent job in that role.

It's a matter of taste. I think Florence Pugh is a curvy cutie and would take her over Sophie Marceau and Catherine McCormack any day.

She looks better in "The Little Drummer Girl." I think the hair color makes a difference.
