Thing that annoyed me about the plot.

Wouldn't go as far as to deem it a plot hole, but certainly something to think about.
How did they survive during winter ? Climate there is most definitely temperate, just look at the species of trees. They would have had well below freezing temperatures. So how do you stay warm in the winter ? They cannot rely on solar panels (they had some on the roof, probably their only source of power) for heating, so they must have used wood, right ? How do you gather enough wood for a winter without noise ? Of course any ort of hatchet would be excluded, you would need to burn only what you find on the ground. How do you burn a fire without a branch popping a sound every now and then ? How do you walk through the snow without making noise ? Also, if you catch a cold, you're pretty much a walking timebomb. Cough once inside the house and you just doomed everyone.
