My friend was late and I missed the beginning
On top of terribly slow cineplex staff. I missed the first 15 minutes or so. Can anyone fill me in on what I missed? Did it show how it started or anything like that?

shareI was also late, I got to the movie and they were silently going through their day, the dad was in his workshop and they showed newspaper clippings of basically the world ending. I assumed we were in a post apocalyptic type society. Then the kids broke the lantern and movie went on from there. What I gathered reading online afterwards- at the beginning the entire family what out scavenging together, and they have 3 kids. The youngest one found a toy and was playing with it (the space shuttle), and it lit up and made noise. So obviously the kid was killed when the toy started making rocket noises. What I assume is maybe the older sister gave him the toy, and later at his grave site she fixed it so it could silently light up? This helps explain the resentment the rest of the family has for the older sister, and why they are apprehensive giving her responsibilities. It also explains more of why the young son is so afraid and skittish (on top of the fact there are bloodthirsty monsters out there) but these are my assumptions that fit with what I saw for the rest of the movie. Anyone else that could clear this up?
shareYou basically have it right..the part you guys saw was approx 200 or 300 or so days after the younger sons death.
But in no way did the family have resentments toward the daughter. She herself was overwhelmed with guilt but the mother blamed herself for not carrying the son and the father blamed himself too by his making certain that he wouldn't lose another with his own sacrifice.
The thing with the daughter was her insolent attitude that was a mixture of guilt about the incident and regular adolescent angst so she wasn't always that easy for them to deal with.
The other thing was that she was deaf...and being deaf made her vulnerable (as she wouldn't hear any sounds she might make or hear the creature if it was close by) so yeah, that might make them apprehensive about giving her some responsibilities..
So the father was working on a hearing aid for her that she scoffed at...and which incidentally gave him some ideas of how they might deal with the creature.
Got it, thanks for the info and clarification. It didn't occur to me that her being deaf would have made it a lot harder for her to go out and do chores on her own, considering she wouldn't be able to judge the sound volume of what she was doing.
Thanks for the reply!
It starts on day 89 of the apocalypse. The family (parents and three children) are out scavenging. The middle child is sick and mom goes through the different medications in the pharmacy and finds some pills for him. The youngest boy finds a space shuttle toy on a top shelf and tries to grab it, but it falls. Fortunately the sister manages to catch it in the air. The father takes the toy away, explains that it is dangerous, removes the batteries and sets the toy and the batteries on a counter. As they are leaving, the girl picks up the toy and gives it to her brother. Without her noticing, he also picks the batteries up.
As they are walking back home on that bridge, the boy turns the toy on and it starts to make sounds. Everyone is horrified. The father runs towards the boy but before he can reach him, a monster comes out of the woods and kills the boy.
The girl feels guilty because she is the one who gave him the toy, although she couldn't have known that he would install the batteries and turn the thing on.
Thank you so much for clearing that up!
shareYeah, it starts on like Day 89 of the "apocalypse". The family is scrounging for some supplies and they have a young son who is very eager to play with a toy that makes noise, which is a no-no. As they are walking back the kid sneaks the toy out of the store (cause the father told him to leave it), he puts the batteries in and it suddenly makes noise which alerts the monsters (which are blind) to scoop up the kid before the dad can get to him. there is also a subplot where the dad may, a little bit, blame the daughter for not taking care of the younger bro like she should have.
Have a short review of this one here if anyone is interested-https://youtu.be/k42HUCd0zzM
