The ending: definitive interpretation

As usual on these discussion boards there will be lots of pseudointellectual interpretation about the inconclusive ending. But Occam's razor (the simplest explanation is usually the right one) suggests that the filmmakers didn't know how to bring the film to a reasonable conclusion, so they took the easy route. Leave the loose ends untied. Then everyone here can have fun figuring it out, and all the critics can tell us what it means and praise the filmmakers for creating such a brilliant ending. Don't believe me? Here's the LA Times comment on the ending: "it’s clear exactly what everyone’s running after". Or the film site birthmoviesdeath.com: "a nail-biting climax".
