Anybody feeling cautious about this?

I love Matthew Weiner and the cast looks great, but the premise itself seems... iffy? Not sure if it can be pulled off.

Part of the reason I'm apprehensive is that as I understand it it deals with different strings of stories with separated characters, right? Not sure what it's called, but basically multiple (rarely) interconnecting storylines. A la Magnolia, Traffic, or Pulp Fiction. Mad Men/Sopranos excelled in using their runtimes to develop the characters, so I don't know that a similar mood/goal can be accomplished.

It's also only a mini-series right? Which is unfortunate since it means no more Matthew Weiner for at least three years, if ever. It also gives even less time to nurture a character show.

Anybody else have similar doubts about The Romanoffs? Anyone got something to assuage mine?

I just got through the first episode (the episodes of this show are very long, btw, an hour and a half each). While it started out well enough, towards the end it got so ridiculous that I felt insulted and cheated out of my time.

I will not continue with the show, and I can see why the IMDB rating for this series isn't that great (and I predict it will go down further) - I regret not having paid more attention to it prior to wasting my time.

I have no interest in watching something fake for only occasional nuggets of something real, and I don't appreciate being misled.

I liked the first 2 shows, but the 3rd was awful. Christina Hendricks was awesome.. but the story was so disconnected, it was terrible. Kind of a cross between Bates Motel and American Horror story. Was not at all like the 1st two shows.

A descendant of the Romanoffs was quoted saying she felt the series was asking the audience to be extremely patient, without any incentive. I believe that is pretty accurate with the 3rd episode.

That Romanoff descendant is spot-on, that was exactly my impression after one episode.

I've now watched the first 3 episodes. Like you, I love Weiner and it does have a great cast.

This isn't what I expected. So far, it comes off as an anthology, with each episode being essentially a movie unto itself, yet loosely interconnected by the Romanov theme. I can't yet tell exactly where he's going with this overall, so will withhold final judgement until the end of the season. For now, I've enjoyed all 3 episodes, in different ways; they all have very different tones and story lines.

As you noted, there isn't the opportunity to have the slow burn of development of characters he had in Mad Men, or his contribution to The Sopranos.

I'm engaged enough to keep watching, and especially enjoyed E3. Fun to see Weiner do what is basically a ghost story, and Christina Hendricks was excellent in it, as was the rest of the cast.

It's totally an anthology. All the promotional material has stated that.

The first two I just watched today, and I liked the both. I'd give those two episodes an 8/10 and I hope the rest of the stories are as interesting and not too irritating or trendy.

I have no idea what this series is about or if these stories somehow connect.
