No Uncle Ben - No Spider-Man

The problem people are having with this new iteration of Spider-Man isn't limited to them simply being loyal to the previous iterations. The problem people are having is related to the fact that this version of Spider-Man betrays everything that Spider-Man stands for. In this version, Tony Stark have replaced Uncle Ben as the beloved mentor figure to Peter. What made Uncle Ben's character important to Peter was the simple fact that he was a good man who raised a good nephew. Uncle Ben wasn't rich, he meant nothing to the rest of the world, but to Peter he was the best man of all men. That's the important lesson of "great power, great responsibility". All Uncle Ben had to do to inspire Peter to become a hero is to be a good man. Not a superhero of his own, not a guy who is smarter than Peter, not a guy who is loved by millions around the world, but just an old man who loves his nephew. That's the point of Peter Parker being an ordinary kid. Tony Stark is one of the smartest, one of the most beloved people in the MCU. So there is nothing complex in Peter looking up to him.

Who are these people who have problems with the new films? This one has a 98% positive fan response, and it seems the overwhelming opinion is that the 2 MCU Spider-Man films are the best to feature the character. They are certainly the closest to the source material of the comics. Just because they didn't tell the origin doesn't lessen the importance of Uncle Ben to Peter.

Bro, the “overwhelming opinion” isn’t that the MCU films are the best to feature Spider-Man. Raimi’s second film is still regarded as the best one.

Do we really need to see Uncle Ben die yet again? I'm thrilled they skipped that for once.

Especially after his idiotic death in ASM where he decided play hero and tackle a fleeing gun-wielding thief over a couple hundred bucks. He deserved that bullet.

I don’t need to see Uncle Ben getting whacked a third time. Frankly his character was overused in the Raimi films and was used ridiculously in the ASM series.

I am glad this was not included.

It was very smart of Feige & co. to transfer Peter's mentor complex to Tony, as it relieves us from the obligation of sitting through the Uncle Ben story yet again, and creates a new dynamic for the character in the MCU, while still being true to Peter's basic personality. Smart decisions like this are why the MCU is thriving while the other attempted franchises go down in flames.

Dude, didn’t we just see Spider-Man crying like wimp over a dying Tony Stark? Then struggling to live up to his expectations?

Marvel made you sit through the Uncle Ben story again... they just replaced a working-class old man from Brooklyn who instilled values in Peter Parker with a wise-cracking billionaire who gave Spider-Man money and expensive toys.

This is “smart” to you? Seems like a shallow change to appeal to a shallow audience to me...

My point was that they did change the FORMULA (which is what this topic is about) but did not change Peter's essential CHARACTER.

I'm sure you'll have some devastating, though specious, response... If your little moments of "victory" help you get through your day that's okay, really... I'm not judging.

Having some sort of mentor figure is a basic part of Peter's character. Everything else about the relationship is very different. Ben and Tony are very different people and the circumstances of the relationship are very different. They have actually... what's that word again... oh right... CHANGED.

If you're going to pretend to not understand basic English just so you can keep trolling, there's probably no point in trying to have a discussion with you. GOOD DAY TO YOU SIR

Your making untrue parallels. People morn people close to them, so why wouldn't he be upset at Tony's death? Bens death was the catalyst for Peter deciding to be a super hero. Peter decided to be a hero long before tonys death. He showed us this in Homecoming, Civil war and the Infinity war. Tony had obviously become his super hero mentor, and lacking a male role model, that stands to reason. So other than him being sad that someone close to him died, there is no comparison. Most of us have multiple people play a mentor role at different points in our lives, and most of us would cry when that person dies.

It sucks. This guy might be our Spider-Man for the next 20 years. A huge epic run. And they screwed up his foundation right from the getgo so it's never gonna be good or right.

Tony didn't exactly replace Uncle Ben. In Civil War, Peter says he failed someone to Tony and he's obviously talking about Uncle Ben. I wish we could've at least had Flashbacks of his death but I guess I understand them not doing it cause they want to be as different as possible. Which is also why they changed the race of all his classmates.

really? have you read the first issue of spiderman? they dont even show uncle ben getting shot just mentioning it briefly.
