My theorie about why it took three tries to get a "good" daughter:

The robots try to raise daughter one, but they don't know how, messed up and the daughter has to be aborted.

The robots decide to place the second daughter as a baby near the people who are still there to see how to properly raise a child. She becomes Woman.

With the learnings they try a third time and raise Daughter properly.

More idea's:

Woman is used as a test to see wheter Daughter will return to the facility. When Daughter says she is special, the robots know she is ready for the task to repopulate the earth. (Similar to the Matrix theme). The bad robots stop invading the facility and Daughter kills Mother and Woman is no longer required. At the end the eyes of Daughter look dark, suggesting she now replaced Mother.

Interesting theory. I would say that from what we see, Mother is doing most of the right things that a parenting book/video would teach, and I assumed that's where she learned them. But I like your point about daughter #2. Maybe she wasn't a mistake who was ejected but instead was used for observational learning by the AI.

Hmm, doesn't woman's age correlate with the first daughter? Aren't we showed that daughter 2 was terminated and hinted that 2 was cremated?

The way i see is that daughter 1 was from start planned to be sent away and maybe memory wiped and programmed to come back at some point to serve as a test for another one.

But yeah, probably was not planed from day one, that plan has formed as daughter 1 has failed or maybe daughter 1 was not told the same story so she knew that mother wiped humanity and that there are survivors.

I actually thought hillary swank was APX01 (she said she was found as a baby) APX02 got torched for have totally low test scores.

Mothers not really dead. She's the hive mind of all the machines. She even explained this to daughter which is why I don't understand why daughter shot her, Its not she can be killed.
