So who was the original Clovehitch Killer? (spoilers)

The dad or the uncle?

The murder did stop for 10 years after the uncle got into a car accident.

Was the dad telling the truth about the photos belonging to his brother? Did he only use them as his own twisted porn stash for 10 years until he was forced to burn it all?

That would explain why before attacking anyone, he did try to recreate the photos while posing himself as the victim.

Seeing how that didn't work at all, he reluctantly attacked a woman in order to restart a photo collection. Notice how he's not enjoying himself at all while all of this is happening. It seems like a chore.

The only evidence of the dad being the one and only Clovehitch killer is that he seemed to have a tried-and-true pitch about being a bank robber in order to calm his victim down before she could be fulled tied and gagged.

The one thing that leads me to believe he is the Clovehitch killer is the cold and evil way he was going to kill his son. Your theory about the uncle is interesting though and it could still be him. Most people will watch this and think McDermott is Clovehitch though, the ambiguity at the end of this flick isn't as obvious as other flicks.

He tried to kill his son, but at that point he was cornered and desperate. Surrendering would have brought shame, a life sentence or maybe capital punishment.

The 2 biggest clues that everything isn't what it seems at face value is the 10 years without any murders until the photos are burned and the fact that he dressed up as a woman. None of the material found by the boy suggested that his dad was a crossdresser or that taking auto-portraits in bondage was part of his killing ritual. The dad was also visibly frustrated when he realized the photos he took of himself were not a viable substitute.

The hand drawn plan of the house turned into a torture dungeon was also a complete fantasy from the dad and obviously not a feasible plan. Which leads me to think that to him, all of this was indeed fantasy and not something he actually wanted to do.

Yeah I agree or it could be that him and the uncle were both doing it together.

The father obviously

So how do you account for the decade hiatus?

Stuff happens

I think his brother got wind of his "activities" so the father tried to kill him but only succeeded in turning him into a vegetable. He was probably pretty shook up and tried to stop. He was successful (church, community leaded, etc.) until the son kicked the hornets nest.

My thoughts exactly!
Also, it’s based on BTK and if I’m not mistaken, BTK waited 10 years or close to it as well between his killing spree.
I believe BTK’s reasoning for this was, I had a baby, a wife, and a life….

it was the Dad all a long.
