Just watched this

Seems that it is just a ripoff of Solaris.

I agree. I found the premise of setting up a community on the planet quite interesting to start with, I liked that the technology seemed more believable and like we know already and I liked the mystery behind why he has been sent to the planet rather than an engineer. However, I'm not enjoying the aspect of the show where their past is haunting them, it makes me think the show will end up being another Lost and focus on redemption of the characters which has been done a thousand times.

Yes, I was hoping it would be something new and/or unusual but if you read the premise for both Solaris movies it is the same story. Person gets asked to come to the place by old friend because weird things going on (seeing dead people) and some have already died. It's the same story, which is disappointing.

reply

It is.. if they were at least honest about it and called it Solaris the series people may be more open to it but don't pretend it's an original idea.

reply

True. I wouldn't have minded that as Solaris was an interesting idea in itself (and the remake had a great soundtrack) but could they really not have come up with some other storyline?

Wouldn't there be a copyright issue here or can anybody just blatantly ripoff other movies now?

reply

I guess we're yet to see whether it's get picked up and whether there are sufficient differences to mean that it's not a complete rip-off of Solaris.

If it is anything like last year's 'selection' then it will be taken up. Don't know why they bothered asking really. Last year you were supposed to pick one out of three choices but they decided to make all three anyway.

I don't mind the similarity. There's a lot they can do with the show format compared to a film that it can stand apart. It also reminded me of another British show, Outcasts.

It feels like it's different already that there is a chaplain instead of a psychologist; similar roles perhaps, feels more spiritual rather than existential.

The plot from Wikipedia is nothing like Solaris. Did they change it? Don't care for the "climate apocalypse", "four horsemen" is better.
