Best Movie I've Seen This Year...

The movie is not for everyone. It isn't for horror fans. This is a beautiful movie that is my favorite so far this year.

Agreed. Lovely poignant experiment about time, life, love, death, grief and the human condition. Not for everybody, but happy to say it was definitely for me.

Who would have known that Casey Affleck would show so much emotion covered in a sheet. I guess he did deserve that Oscar.

reply

It was quite clever how they didn't just drape the sheet over him haphazardly. It was carefully aligned so the eyes expressed certain emotions and angles to give us a sort of sub conscious attitude towards the ghost.

I'm 100% certain people will say this is pretentious garbage (both the movie and this post) but I'm 100% that I don't care. Great movie.

reply

For some, anything they don't like is pretentious.

reply

Absolutely.

Yes it is! 8.5/10. And in one of the bonus features on the DVD the director discussed the difficulty of creating the ghost sheet costume.

I see a bunch of in theater films (about 1-2 per week) by myself. I got my fiancรฉe to go with me to see this film and I was obsessed with it after! I looked up interviews with the director and listened to the soundtrack for about a week after. My fiancรฉe said it wasn't for her.

reply

Let's face it, women like chick flicks. This wasn't one of those. I always go to movies by myself too. I hate it when I go with others and they whine about the movie all the way home. No more.

reply

I agree completely! 8.5/10.

Agreed that this it is a beautiful movie.

Considering Casey Affleck was completely hidden from view and had no dialogue I felt that he conveyed his characters feelings perfectly.

The only negative I found was that some shots were drawn out for way too long. His partner dragging out the trash, eating the pie in the kitchen at the start of the movie etc. Surely those 10 minutes could have shown some more character backstory or reasons why he didn't want to leave the house.

Great film regardless :)

I did not mind those. It helped create an atmosphere of timelessness. Great movie! 8.5/10!

Completely agree. amazing movie.

reply

Agree completely! 8.5/10! But most people will not like it because of the slow pace. Many of them have the attention span
of a gnat.

reply

So this is the third thread you've used the gnat analogy, that I've seen so far. If you actually were "clever" and "cerebral" you'd be a little more original.

Buck up, Buttercup! You're such a pussy!

AGS worked well for me too; it had me crying my eyes out by the end, and it had a bunch of good visual and sound ideas. I guess I'd describe AGS (possibly a little reductively) as Ghost/Truly Madly Deeply remade by Terrence Malick (with a little Linklater and Tarkovsky somewhere in the mix).

AGS is possibly a little slow-paced for its own good. I might try to put together a pacier but still contemplative cut over New Years, heh, as if the ersatz director were Badlands Malick rather than Tree of Life Malick, and just see whether anything is lost from that. Still, I'd say that as it stands AGS is one of the year's best films; top 20 easily, maybe higher.

reply

It is definitely a strange movie that will bring negative and positive emotions at the same time. At the end you'll be like WTF have I just watched!? It isa difficult movie to watch if you are impatient. Just give it a try and you'll be asking questions at the end of this. It's a puzzle not a movie :)

Amen.

I agree, this is a beautiful film meant for thinkers and feelers.
