Could Vaughn just tell the police the truth?

Logan instructs him to tell the police that Marcus drove north. But what if Logan simply tells them the truth — like everything?

He would probably go to jail for killing the boy and hiding the bodies. But the townsfolk would get charged for killing Marcus too.

In another sense, the ending relies on the villagers’ putting a lot of trust in Vaughn, which I don’t see as realistic.

That was basically my only gripe with the film.

Maybe they were relying on Vaughn to keep quiet due to him being afraid of getting charged as well. That's my assumption anyway.

Vaughn seems like the type who's conscious would eat away at him until he talked though.

I agree that the townsfolk put an immense amount of trust in Vaughn and that didn't make sense to me either.
