Started out exceptionally well…

*spoiler*

And then went to shit. Such a shame too, I mean I LOVE a good Wicker Man play-off/inspired by film, e.g. Midsommar.
I thought the blood offering in the receptacle bit was a wonderful addition to the list of conditions cults in film require of their members, but was ultimately let down by the reason for it. There was absolutely no need for the nature goddess, imo, that ruined a near perfect beginning to a story/film that had a great deal of potential.
I think it could have worked if the film makers had only implied her existence, showing without showing, like the Blair Witch, that would have worked for me.
Less is more would have worked so well in this film but when they went full send with it, I immediately checked out.

I felt that the very beginning was a tad fast and I would have liked some brooding flashback scenes or more interaction at his home before he embarkss (a pace similar to A Cure for Wellness) otherwise I agree with everything you said. Also I didn't like what was done to the lamb on that ferry.
