Any series that starts out with a lecture by Neil DeGras Tyson is going to be bad
Hate that guy.
shareHate that guy.
shareDeGras Tyson didn't jinx it so far, it's watchable. Not exactly the next big hit, but I've seen worse.
shareI can't even finish the first episode it is so dumb and cliche. 2/10 or lower.
shareAny series that has an asteroid rushing towards the Earth is watchable in my book. I don't have high criteria for that type of shows.
shareUpdate: in episode 3 they finally broke the cliche and protagonists are now facing a dilemma.
Spoiler ahead
Americans have to decide whether to break the asteroid which will slow down the pieces just enough not to hit USA but Russia and China which will kill 1 billion people but leave americans alive, or try a different approach and potentially save everyone.
They decide to annihilate Russia and China. Fortunately, NASA was hacked by Tanz before they could do it. Now everyone is in the same boat again. (I wonder if they will blame russians for hacking, that would be so typical)
They did not decide to annihilate China and Russia. Orbital mechanics decided that. We don't know what area of the globe would be devastated if the asteroid was hit at the second rendezvous point. It might be the same location, but likely is another.
Note that they are trying to get control back so they can use the second point, regardless of which area of the world gets hit.
It was just an unfortunate choice of words. I know it's pure luck that US would be spared in that scenario. But now I'm wondering what would their decision be
if those pieces of asteroid were headed towards US instead of Russia and China. Would they sacrifice themselves to save humanity?
I suppose that would be too controversial scenario for a series like this one. It was not meant to be a deep existential series after all, but a light summer entertainment.
Update: well, what do you know, they did decide to annihilate China and Russia after all. Maybe the first glance on an impact map gave them
(the vice president and his cabal)
the idea, or this was a plan all along.
shareYes, this time it looks like some elements in the government (including the new president) are choosing to impact the asteroid at a point where the debris will impact on Russia and China. This is almost as much as a cliche as other things we've seen. Unfortunate. We'll have to see.
shareTurns out it was
russians
who did the hacking. Another cliche crossed off the list.
shareNewest episode of the show is still revolving around russians. Apparently, only americans and russians know that the asteroid is coming and both want to get their hands on EM drive before it's too late. All the other nations are clueless and/or have lousy spies.
The episode had a good old cold-war feel which seems to be so popular in US nowadays. The only redeeming factor was the appearance of John Noble who plays a bad guy for a change. Unfortunately, they didn't give him much to work with.
The show keeps improving and getting more interesting, but only as an espionage drama/soap opera. Asteroid is so far just a necessary evil that put everything in motion. I have a feeling that they can go on like this for a couple of seasons before asteroid ruins their nice little soap opera by actually showing up.
shareIn the latest episode, they finally launched EM drive after cutting off electricity in the whole Russia, so that russians won't notice the launch. (don't at least some radar systems in Russia have independent source of power? seems to me that screenwriters imagine Russian military as a bunch of idiots who've never heard of independent power supply. Perhaps if the enemy was North Korea, it would seem more believable, but Russia? Hell, no.)
shareThis series just got more interesting with the latest addition of Sasha Roiz. Some people might remember him as captain Sean Renard from Grimm. He is so damn good at playing villains that they decided to let him do it again in this show.
As I mentioned in one of earlier posts, John Noble (Fringe) also plays a villain here. Those are some excellent casting choices.
In the latest episode we discovered that the president of US has Alzheimers but this was carefully hidden from the public. Until the moment she decided she wants to address the nation, they foolishly let her, and she forgot everything she was gonna say in the middle of the sentence. Enters Sasha Roiz as a former vice president/new president, and a very bad guy who already tried to kill the main actress once before. He is also probably behind the plot to destroy Russia and China with the chunks of asteroid. As things stand now, asteroid is downgraded to just a mere tool in political games and schemes.
yeah he is a moron.
shareSo annoying. I hate when he shows up in otherwise good documentaries on science and astronomy.
The only presence I detest even more is Zahi Hawass in documentaries on Egypt. That guy is the worst.
