in terms of quality, kind of similar to 'blackout'
This is the second modern Russian sci-fi movie I've seen that turned out to be fairly good.
I mean, they are quite different and explore different ideas.
As some have mentioned, this movie has been influenced by matrix, inception and, I'd say, metro - the video game series. Then again, you could argue that those films have been influenced by each other as well.
I'd rank this movie above inception, but below matrix - the reason being, this movie had a coherent story, where the motivations for each character are all explained in the end, and everything simply makes sense. In terms of visuals, it's quite interesting - but yes, we've seen all that in inception and metro. The pacing.... is a bit problematic, it starts off pretty slow. Also, some of the characters are oversimplified to a point of being one dimensional - I think it takes its cue from the metro game here and acting is quite similar to that game as well (voice acting, if you will).
All in all.... I liked 'blackout' more. This film though was kind of interesting as well though, and these 2 films indicate that Russian cinematography is moving in the right direction and may one day surpass the stale Hollywood, which is afraid of exploring new territories and would rather release 20 sequels or remakes (or superhero crap). So, yeah, consider me impressed. Two new Russian sci-fi films that are actually decent? Let's hope this is a beginning of a trend.
