A good movie ruined by (spoiler)

way too much fantasy - the scene where they start hovering. The ending was nonsense. Would a genuinely good man turn into a suicide bomber thai easily. Are we not to take any of this literally ?? Almost as bad as Mother!

reply

I think that is the whole point of this movie - a genuinely good man won't turn himself into a suicide bomber, religious or not.

a good man who is wracked with guilt over a dead son & who's lost his wife & his faith & is drinking himself to death may indeed find meaning in extremism. i don't find that too difficult to accept.

Yes, a lot of efforts are put in the story to explain why the priest (the religious one) and the environmental activist (the not-so-religious one) took an extreme path- to end their own lives. Yet, none of them really became a suicide bomber in the end, because they are genuinely good men. That is the whole point.

reply

he didn't, third act of the movie is in his head.

Here is what the director said about the ending. https://www.indiewire.com/2018/05/first-reformed-ending-explained-paul-schrader-1201970200/

I say let the priest rest in peace.

reply

The article mentions Taxi Driver. I thought I was the only one who was constantly reminded of Taxi Driver in the third act.

reply

Yeah I didn’t buy that a priest would become a suicide bomber - this is Christianity, not Islam.
