Why did they keep detonating the explosives early?

When they put the bomb on the LT Governor, I can understand they had no control on how fast he was going to move to get to the aliens. But at the end, the guy detonated before he even left the elevator.

Wouldn't it have caused more damage if he waited until he met them?

Yeah, that wasn't as clear as it needed to be. But I don't think it detonated in the elevator. When the credits started to roll, it did show that the Chicago Zone had been eliminated, so it seems he was successful.
