The critical response to this movie has been dismal. Can anybody speak to its quality? I liked the trailers, the premise, and the idea of seeing McCarthy do dramatic work (often the goofieset comic actors do amazing dramatic work (Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love or Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

McCarthy has done excellent work in serious roles, most notably in Can You Ever Forgive Me, and Vincent, with Bill Murray.
I would ultimately make my own mind up if I see it, but I have to be very selective about which films I can carve out the time and money to go see, so I ask for opinions, information, reviews, etc., to try to play the odds. I was just wondering if word-of-mouth/ public opinion on moviechat was going to be similar to the reviews from the paid critics.

Far too many people with websites, youtube channels and vlogs these days trying to cause controversy and make a name for themselves these days.
Too many people trying to get in first with their reviews, who either praise a movie to the hilt or absolutely trash it.
It's about sorting the wheat from the chaff.
And never in a million years would infuse this website as a source for reviews or opinions...
I am using different sources. I referenced critics' reviews in my original post (I have looked at "official" sources), I am aware of the IMDB rating, Rotten Tomatoes, etc.
I thought I would come on here and see if anybody wanted to converse about the film to here from somebody I could talk to via the message board. I've had many excellent conversations on movie message boards talking about the meaning behind films and the facets of movies that are loved and hated. It often brings a fresh angle or take to the film that I didn't see, or allow me some insight into why people like/don't like a movie I'm thinking of seeing.
That is part of my wheat-from-chaff process.
That's why I asked the initial question.
Cool.
It just that largely, in my experience, i see very little genuine discussion about movies on this board.
Some...but not much.
But if you get some genuine responses and discussions here, then all well and good.

Maybe, but it's an interesting cast and I don't always agree with other people's ratings - especially so-called critics.
