So does this have enough horror elements to be labeled horror?

Would like to know. Haven’t seen it.

reply

I don't think so, no

reply

Definitely not. No jump scares, etc. More psychological maybe but not much, imo. It was pretty boring.

reply

The mood is horror... the psychological terror is real... there is a sense of unease throughout the film...
Supernatural elements...
Horror or thriller? I'd say more of a horror... Certainly if you have kids of your own it is...

reply

i would barely call it a film. xD

reply

haha!

It was one if my favourites this year...

well, i respect that, but obviously is disagree. the problem i have with lanthimos in genereal is, that he manages to make his films seem like there is something there to discover, while essentially there is nothing. or to be more specific, with dogtooth and TKOASD there is basically nothing, while lobster at least has a point until half into the film, where lanthimos completely messes it up and falls back into his old routines.

as i said in another thread, it's basically like haneke, if you remove all the points and add some crappy music.

nevertheless, if you like the tone and weirdness of lanthimos' films, i highly recommend roy andersson's recent trilogy. it is superior to what yorgos does on every level, but he goes the opposing direction: each and every scene has a deeper meaning, yet his films are partially enjoyable to watch ... well, until the last 10 minutes of the trilogy, which are like an intenional symbolical sledgehammer to the balls, which in this case is also meant in a positive way. confused? watch it, you will understand.

I've only seen this one of his... I get your point, that there is something missing... But I liked the mood and atmosphere enough that I could look past that... There is enough in there for me to work with...

I think so few films these days really succeed at creating a mood that this movie stands out... In a great way...

I'll check out the other recommendations... thanks 👍

P.S. Roy Andersson the Swedish director?

reply

i can somwhat totally relate. for me, i started with lobster (kind of a disappointment), then made my way through dogtooth (i was already warned that it was utter crap, so i did not have high hopes to begin with) and recently TKOASD (since my expectations were so low to begin with, i just found to be exhausting and somewhat tiring).

have you ever seen films by michael haneke? as i mentioned he also creates a similar mood and atmosphere, yet he always has a point. in some cases they are a bit cryptic, but worth the extra effort. he also proves that this kinds of films work much better without any music at all.

yes, the swedish director. thanks for considering checking out his work.

one more recommendation, if you are interested, yet unrelated to both mentioned directors: we need to talk about kevin. by far the easiest to digest out of the ones i mention, but still a bit on the heavy side. i have the feeling you might like it.

reply

I liked Funny Games by Haneke... We Need to Talk About Kevin is on my watchlist as well... 👍

reply

while funny games is one of his best, benny's video, cache and the 7th continent are quite close runner ups. i found 7th continent and benny's video to be the most disturbing out of the bunch. in fact benny's video is a great companion piece if you intent on watching "we need to talk about kevin". the latter is more polished, but BV has much more punch.

reply

Thanks man... I'll check them out...

By the way, have you seen Mother! ... it's a very different film for The Killing of A Sacred Deer, but somehow people have criticised it similarly... For not being a "movie"... I really liked it... In fact, I think it's underrated...

you are welcome. thank you for considering to check out my recommendations.

not yet. on the one hand i am a bit careful when it comes to aronofsky, ever since his stinker "the fountain", on the other hand i know that sometimes you have to be ... let's say "prepared" .. or "in the right mood" .. ever since one of his masterpieces "requiem for a dream". the others being "the wrestler" and "pi". don't get me wrong, i love his overall work, but i just don't want to openly run into the "metaphorical knife" of a similar brilliant downer without having a great light hearted comedy in the arsenal to watch afterwards to bring me back to stable mood. i guess once " pitch perfect 3" is out on bluray, that will be the evening i am ready for this. to put this in context: while i am a die-hard haneke fan, but until this very day i am not yet ready to check out "love". and let's not get me started with ulrich seidl's latest trilogy. can't wait until i feel ready to cope with this. i just have to wait for the right moment ... or the right psychopharmaka to cope with it. xD

reply

I'm watching this now, and I would say no. I guess it's more supernatural.

reply

The only scary thing in this movie is
when the mother says that they should kill one of the kids instead of her because they're still young enough to have another one.
reply

no.
