Looks like a Star Trek spoof tv series
I'm kind of tired of Seth Mac Farlane's brand of humor though. Is it worth watching?
shareI'm kind of tired of Seth Mac Farlane's brand of humor though. Is it worth watching?
shareThey were selling it as a spoof, but it's similar to classic Star Trek dealing with social issues, but visually looks like ST:The Next Generation. There is a little humor, but I'm not if it's enough to qualify as a spoof.
shareWe aren't talking Family Guy humor here. It very subdued. It's more inline with Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel humor...the show get serious throughout the episodes ..
shareSo if it's not Family Guy humor than is it like American Dad, The Cleveland Show Ted, Ted2 or A Million Ways to Die in the West type of humor?
And Spiderman Homecoming humor is in line with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel but I hated Spiderman Homecoming humor.
So is this show supposed to be funny or is like a wannabe Star Trek?
It is 80% Star Trek TNG and 20% awful jokes. Just ignore the jokes. You will enjoy it. Episode 3 is amazing!
shareWhy would I watch this show when I have Star Trek?
shareDon't watch it. The fact that you have already asked too many questions and this statement right here means you really don't want to watch it or care. Stick with Star Trek and the new Discovery show.
shareI just wanted to know more about the show without having to watch it and so far nobody has said anything that would make me want to watch it.
shareWell, it is free on Hulu, but it really offers nothing but bad jokes.
Perhaps it has not hit its stride, or maybe it doesn't have one.
I thing this series gets pulled very quickly.
I am pretty sick of what passes for humor these days. The problem with this show is that it is just not really smart enough. making it science fiction does not make it intellectual and automatically interesting. star trek was a long time ago, and the jokes in orville are mostly tired cliches.
shareIt's not "Seth MacFarlanes brand of humour", it's something else. It's like TNG with real people acting like normal people do.
shareI am totally convinced that those who blast the show never saw an episode, or have completely poisoned themselves with a preconceived opinion that they *couldn't* like it.
To thine own self be true..
My wife is anti-McFarlane it's almost funny, and I don't particularly care for him as a person or his politics. She HATES family guy with a passion. She sat through the first episode with an open mind because that's her nature (and she borders on brilliant anyway). She actually enjoys this show and has recommended it to our friends. Good woman...
@ Barclays I was concerned about this as I really don't like Seth Mac Farlane's type of humour but to my great surprise this is really a fun little show to watch: if you like Star Trek Next Generation you'll dig this show, it's pretty much the same thing with the same tone and asks surprisingly interesting questions about culture, social issues, what kind of misunderstandings could arise from living/working with alien civilizations, etc... there is some very light tongue in cheekeness that goes on at times which is pure Seth Mac Farlane stupidity, I ignore as it's not funny but it's so minimal it does not spoil the show.
I'm really enjoying this show.
Did a bit of research and turns out Mac Farlane's a serious trekky and really just wanted to do a star trek show, so he called it the Orville but it's really Star Trek Next Gen lol.
Well I heard that there were a couple of A-list stars in a couple of episodes so I am definitely going to check that out.
shareIn an interview, he said they are going for a MASH type of comedy/drama. Imagine MASH + TNG and you're pretty darn close.
I don't watch Family Guy or any other SM shows but I like this.
