S1 Finale Discussion

All right, I just finished the finale. I thought it was pretty good, though my one real gripe is that the specific moment that it ends on doesn't really feel like the end of a season to me. It just feels like the end of a regular mid-season episode. But that aside, I thought it was pretty good. Definitely better than episode 9.

I'm glad to see that the truth about Adrian has finally come out, because it was just painful to watch Eve keep being a bitch to him after we knew definitively that Jay was innocent. Though I felt like the reveal that the cop guy was actually Alex's father to be a bit hokey. I mean, I think I remember them setting it up earlier in the show that Kevin's not actually her dad, but still, I didn't love that plot development.

Bryan has finally found his path to answers about who he is, so that is also good.

I wonder if Jay is dead for real. If so, that kid really got a raw deal. He gets accused of raping a girl he didn't actually rape, then his own father casts him out to die, and then he gets captured and fucked up by the mist. That is rough.

I felt like the scene where Kevin crashes the SUV through the mall door and everyone dies to be pretty well done--the skeleton effect when the old woman dies was especially creepy--but I also felt like that seemed kind of out of character for him. I mean, I get it, the people in the mall just cast him and his family out so he's probably feeling pretty vengeful but . . . I dunno, that moment just didn't totally ring true for me.

All in all, I ended up really enjoying this show and thought that, for the most part, it got better as the season progressed. I'd give it a 7.5 and I'm really hoping that it gets renewed.

Thanks for this - good write up. I too feel that the episode didn't seem to be the end of the series - I actually had to go look it up to make sure. Poor Jay :( Overall I liked the series less as it went on. I think I'll go with a score of 6. It was just so hard to find any character likeable enough to care about. Maybe the druggie girl - she cleaned up all right in the end.

A lot of people keep saying that they don't feel like the characters are likable I didn't really have a problem with any of our main players. Sure, Kevin lacks charisma, and I didn't like that Eve had this vendetta against Jay (though I can see why she would, believing that he raped her daughter), but I thought that everyone was okay, especially Jay, Bryan and Mia.

I'm surprised to hear that you felt like the show got less interesting as it went on. I enjoyed it all the way through, but I felt like eps 7, 8 and 10 were probably the best.

Funny how people have such being opinions on the show. For example, I found the last few episodes enjoyable and you thought they were the best. I didn't really have a problem with the characters for the most part. Well, Eve bugged me with her weird looking face. Also, the security guard was a douche bag.

It seems like every so often a show comes a long and people just decide they're going to hate it. It's as if the first few reviewers give a negative review and everyone else takes that as as a signal to pile on in a big hate fest.

I don't think The Mist is top-level entertainment, but I did think it was enjoyable and I didn't really understand all the super-negative reactions from most people.

I was really bummed out that Jay died. He definitely seemed like the most innocent character in this show, always altruistic and it never paid off. There could have been some interesting moments if he was left alive. What I really hated was that the mall manager guy doesn't get a brutal death like everyone else, while he had to be one of the most deserving. I was really looking forward to watching the mist tear him apart. Instead, he's going to live in his office forever since he stole all that food. Very, very unsatisfying.

I thought there was a chance that Jay might survive. It was ambiguous enough that I thought it was at least possible that he'd get resurrected for Season 2.

But unfortunately, we now know that there will be no Season 2.

I share your opinion on that... I was on the edge of my seat hoping that we would see Jay take a breath at the end when the camera focused on him, since it almost seemed like the mist was "possessing" him. He certainly could have made a comeback if season 2 was a thing. Poor guy, it does make me feel a little better that there was a chance!

Still, what the heck was wrong with the main characters all the sudden? He was only a couple feet away! They were always taking risks to save others, and yet they couldn't take the few steps required to grab him when he was in full view of everyone?!

Your observation there may just be more evidence that they were actually planning to bring him back. The whole thing was just a gimmick to make us think he was dead when in reality we find out in S2 that somehow he escaped.

I ended up enjoying S1 quite a bit--a lot more than most other people seemed too--so I really am disappointed that we're not getting a second season. Apparently the ratings were pretty bad. I just don't get all the negativity that surrounded the show.
