Really good directorial debut film from Jonah Hill

Really the script and the acting was really top notch. From all the friends especially Na-Kel Smith and Olan Prenatt , from Lucas Hedges as Stevie's older troubled brother and Katherine Waterson as their Mom, even the young women they met at the party. The way it was shot definitely was a nod to Harmony Korine (also acted in this one). The soundtrack had a nice mixture of rap and indie to 60's music in it. Hill really has potential to be a top director.

I agree on the Harmony Korine comparison, no big actors but everyone was played to their strengths. However there didn't seem to be a story that pulled the movie forward. Or maybe I missed it.

It’s a “Slice of Life” type of story.

Stevie starts as this shy young lonely boy that was beat up by his brother and neglected by his mother.

He matures, gets friends that treat him with respect and stands up to his brother.

It seems everyone in this film is a better person towards the end. Even his brother and mother.

You can say all the characters had an arc.

I have to agree, the direction might have been the best part of this movie. It was well shot and all the actors did a good enough job to make it believable. They all seemed like street kids for the most part rather than actors playing roles.

I decided to watch this today even though I had no interest in the skater scene of the 90s. None of my friends were into that but this movie is a fun glimpse into that world. Entertaining stuff, I got to give it a 7.2 out of 10. Good film...
