It's a unhappy ending for Edwina in a way

It always left me uneasy even in Eastwood 71 version, about the character of Edwina. I always felt if she knew about the poison plan, she would have given up the other women to save McBurney. Would it have been easier to knock her off as well even though you can tell they care for her. I think it's awful bleak ending for Edwina, she has to happily play along with these women who basically murdered her man. And it's not much she can do about it, Miss Martha and the other girls are probably the only family she got and if wanted to get out of there she wouldn't last too long.

I haven't read the book on which the film is based on. Maybe they explain it in that. It just feels at the end Edwina has to take it on the chin, I love the look on Dunst like she's just disgusted to be around these people but the first chance she has to leave once the war is over, she's gone.
