She lost the gold medal because 5 of the 9 judges were from Iron Curtain nations. Which is utterly absurd. Judges from the rest of the world rightfully voted for her. They might as well have not even had a competition and awarded it to the Eastern European. It's that simple. And after what she went through to get robbed at the end due to political reasons had to have made her deeply bitter.
I don't get the criticism of her after winning the silver. It's a participation award.
