Oh, I think that it would. She is a great athlete. Baiul was unbeatable on that day--so good that she actually added two triple-axles to her final program, and no one EVER improvises during an Olympic final program. Chen Lu's grace and artistry were so profound that I teared up. Finishing behind Baiul and ahead of Lu was a fantastic achievement. Barbs, from your username I infer that you may have spent some time in Beantown. If you have, there's a good chance you know this great, world-class athlete is also a bitch with a potty mouth, and a home-wrecker who took her agent away from his wife. In short, just like all the rest of us, Nancy is flawed, a combination of the superlative and the disappointing. Given a really good director and a deft, nonjudgmental script, that could make for a really good movie.

Oksana had a lot of challenges in her life, you got that right. I felt very sorry for her in that costume. I also know that she has had problems with alcohol; and she prevailed anyway! That which does not kill us makes us stronger. (Although, because I have known so many driven, high-performing people [among whom I immodestly include myself], for those folks, I like to change the Nietzsche quote to, That which makes us stronger does not kill us.) I think that you write very well. May I please steal the word, quarterwits? But I have a question for you: are these bozos really worth your time? Do they recognize irony, or do they bump up against their limit at Crude Sarcasm?

PS I remember a comment that Elvis Stoiko made about Oksana. He, and I think that he was a GREAT athlete, said, "You skate from the blade up. She is BAIUL! She skates from
the blade up!" Elvis Soiko was also a considerable swordsman, to which I can relate myself. Blade = Blade.

Very close, and I am impressed, just as I was impressed by your comment elsewhere that you can profile a chess opponent by his/her style of play absent having met the other player.

First: I am a confirmed Episcopalian. I was born to an authoritarian German Catholic mother and a wishy-washy/probably de facto agnostic father, who compromised on Episcopalianism as the family religion. Interesting fact: when Mom and Dad approached the local Episcopal parish about joining the church, the church took Catholic Mom in immediately, but required Protestant Dad (don't know which Protestant sect; c'mon, I was a fetus) to take lessons before accepting him. (Anglican (white/upper-middleclass Christian church = Roman Catholic church with the Mass served in English and the priests can have sex.)
If you want to meet The Complete Authoritarian, find yourself a German Catholic. I had a terrible religious experience under the guidance of my certifiably insane (and I've earned a doctorate in clinical psychology) mother, but I have God in my life nonetheless. That which does not kill us . . .

Second: I do not play chess. I do not play Go. I do not play games, but I have tremendous respect for chess and Go. I have been trained as a martial artist by the world's highest-ranking master, Founding Master Chang Sik Kim. Games don't appeal to me; that's just me. What appeals to me is putting my own blood on the line. That jazzes me. Can I read an adversary? That is a rhetorical question, as you know. Do I recognize a kindred spirit? I do.

Your reply is, of course, optional; but I would like to see it.

And yes, I was an only child. I am impressed with you, HarvardBarbie. Ordinal birth is one of my interests in getting to know others. Will you let me know more about yourself? You are by no means an adversary, so I am limited. I am guessing middle child, or youngest child?

reply

[deleted]

Please, not on my behalf.

I am also ambidextrous, but you already knew that.

You are emotionally smarter than I am. I was far off in my ordinal guess. Damned Y chromosome!

Yet I think that you will forgive me. I hope.

I am grateful for what you shared with me about your parents.

The only time that I've had sodium pentathol (for the rest of you: pain killer AND truth syrum, used by the CIA and others) was when I had my wisdom teeth extracted my senior year of college, and I needed to have someone drive me home because I was too high, and my German Catholic Mom was my chauffeur, and I wanted SO MUCH to tell her about how wonderful reefer was.

Your double X is beautiful. Thank you for letting me see it. I have a story that I have written. The Lengend Of The White (yeah, well, okay, all Unicorns are white, I was young, okay, when I wrote it) that I would like to share with you, if you are interested.

The idea that Nancy Kerrigan is/was a home wrecker is wrong, R_Kane. Jerry Solomon, her agent-turned boyfriend-then husband, was in the process of divorcing his now ex-wife even before the romance between him and Nancy Kerrigan even started, which was in 1994.

reply

Jerry's then-wife, Kathy, says that he started having an affair in 1993, and there were rumors in the 1994 Olympic Village about he and Nancy fooling around. Perhaps we will never know the reality, but history shows that the way Kerrigan behaved at that the me damaged her image. Perception is reality.

reply

Perception can still be wrong, as it was here. Also, the romance between Jerry Solomon and Nancy Kerrigan started in 1994, not 1993.

reply

"During the Walt Disney World parade she participated in following the 1994 Winter Olympics, she was caught on microphone saying to Mickey Mouse, "This is dumb. I hate it. This is the corniest thing I have ever done." She later claimed her remark was taken out of context."

When Kerrigan hosted Saturday Night Live she set the record straight that she actually said to Mickey Mouse "this is the horniest thing I have ever done."

Not that I remember but she wasn't a very good host. I just mentioned it because it was the one funny line she had on the show.

As for the other items I can't think of anything that would offend me less in 2018 than the behavior of Nancy Kerrigan following the 1994 olympics lol

Oh I thought Margot Robbie did an excellent job. I don't believe everything Tonya Harding says but I get the impression she actually believes it herself. But considering she was banned from the sport she loves and became a social pariah, I think she's more than made the price for whatever happened back then.

reply

This:

"I get the impression that she (Tonya) actually believes it herself."

is the whole problem, Markdown474. Tonya still denies that she was partly responsible for the attack on Nancy Kerrigan, which resulted in a potentially crippling physical injury to her. The fact that most people (myself included) don't believe her says something right there. It's got nothing to do with her class background, or anything else. Tonya (Harding) Price's own arrogance, stupidity and refusal to face up to the role that she clearly played in the sordid attack on Nancy Kerrigan (obstructing the investigation and prosecution of Jeff Gillooly and his henchmen), affectively sanctioning and approving of it, is what cost her a promising skating career.

reply

It was potentially crippling but not actually crippling and we have to consider that when thinking of the punishment Tonya deserves. A drunk driver could potentially kill someone but unless they do the penalty will be much less severe. I realize she's never accepted responsibility (for anything really) but even so personally I feel Tonya suffered enough and if she's managed to find some personal happiness I'm okay with that.

reply

Tonya is now married, to a much nicer guy, and they have a son, who's around six years old. No matter what the reason(s) for Tonya's doing what she did (obstructing the investigation and prosecution of her ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly and his henchmen, plus, not that long afterwards, inflicting a totally unprovoked beating with a hubcap on Darren Silver, a now ex-boyfriend, they were still crimes, for which she lost her skating career, and she should've.

Had Nancy Kerrigan's assailant hit Nancy Kerrigan's leg a tad or so lower than he did, she wouldn't have been able to walk again, and had the whack to Nancy Kerrigan's knee been a tad or two higher, her muscle in that area would've been calcified. Just because Nancy Kerrigan wasn't crippled for life due to that injury doesn't mean that a crime wasn't committed.

Tonya Harding's denial of her involvement in the masterminding and planning of that sordid attack on a rival figure skater didn't help her, either.

reply

Oh I'm not saying a crime wasn't committed and I think more likely than not Tonya was in on the planning. It's fortunate for everyone involved that the "hitmen" were really incompetent. Had Nancy's skating career ended because of this, the punishment likely (and rightfully) would've been much more severe and I doubt Tonya would've gotten off as easy as she did.

reply

You're right about the first sentence. Markdown474, plus I've always believed that Tonya Harding was definitely in on the masterminding and planning of the whole sordid attack on Nancy Kerrigan. The "hitmen" had, at one point, even considered cutting the Achilles tendon of Nancy Kerrigan's right leg, which was her landing leg, but Shane Stant said "No, that's a little drastic." At one point, they'd even talked about killing her, as well, but they scrapped that idea.

Had the "hitman" been accurate, and therefore resulted in Nancy Kerrigan's being even more seriously injured, Tonya's punishment would've been even harsher, and she might've even had to serve a jail sentence. Tonya did get off easy, but the destruction of her skating career was imminent, in any event.

reply

Jerry Solomon was not married at the time that he and Nancy Kerrigan were in a romance. In fact, Jerry Solomon's marriage to his ex-wife had been on the rocks for some time, and he was in the process of divorcing her at the time.

reply

Poor Mickey! What an incredibly mean thing to say to him!!!!

reply

Nancy Kerrigan’s skating was dull as dust. Every routine culminated in a big boring camel spin. Oksana was artistic. She could compete today against Olympians. Tonya skating was, like Tonya, rough around the edges. Not much artistry, just a lot of jump set ups.

reply

Both Nancy Kerrigan's and Oksana Baiul's figure-skating were much more artistic than Tonya Harding's. Tonya was namely a jumper, and watching constant jumping on the ice gets kind of tiresome after awhile.

Hmm, no wonder there's a conspiracy that Nancy hired the hit on herself.

reply

Since when is there such a conspiracy? That's a lot of baloney.

Wow - thanks for the info
