Is this bull$hit worth seeing?
Just wondering.
shareI didn't know of the real life incident, so I was going in blind. Not sure if that makes a difference or not, but I really enjoyed it.
shareI was a teenager when events were in the news and I think that enriches the film, but it's not necessary to know. It opens stating it's based "Irony free (LMAO!)," v. contradictory interviews in the media (& I guess evidence obtained BC there are a couple of IRL video clips). From the title, its from Tonya's POV, so she's treated sympathetically, but she is definitely no darling.
There's a lot of comedy in this film, while also being dramatic, biographical, and a love story!
Extremely worth it.
shareNancy Kerrigan was the victim
shareOf course. Tonya Harding was a victim of other crimes, but Nancy Kerrigan was absolutely the victim in The Incident, as the film refers to it. Have you seen it? The film is in no way an anti-Kerrigan piece.
Somebody asked if watching it was worth it. I said yes. I also find The Wolf of Wall Street worth watching which many don't. Maybe these producer-actors shouldn't keep casting themselves as questionable people, but I'll watch nearly every performance purported to be great just to see for myself.
no.
shareBecause of the blue and teal or because of the sympathetic treatment of Tonya Harding?
shareboth and also because it's just bad and clichéd.
shareFor me, just having a sufficient amount of knowledge about the real-life Tonya Harding, and that whole grisly, sordid attack on Nancy Kerrigan, and the fact that Tonya Harding, in real life, more than likely helped mastermind and plan that assault, in addition to my having seen the on-line trailer to that film, is sufficient enough for me to put the film "I, Tonya" on my "don't go to see" list regarding movies.
It also looks like a poorly cast, poorly acted and poorly made piece of junk.
It is all of those things.
shareYou didn't see it
shareSame here, is it just one of those films where they praise the performance of the lead, for being just like the character was in real life, because there is nothing else to enjoy?
shareWell, as someone who doesn't give two ships about awards and critics, I think it was definitely worth it. I don't even think it matters if you're a Tonya Harding fan/hater.
shareTo each their own, but I put the film "I, Tonya" at the very top of my "don't-go-to-see" list regarding movies, and I still refuse to see it. Having seen trailers online of "I, Tonya", I believe that this film is meant to glorify Tonya Harding and to generate more sympathy for her, and I'm absolutely NOT buying it.
shareI can't say I felt it glorified her at all as a person (or her choices for that matter). It was definitely based on a specific set of interviews with Harding and those around her, but I didn't feel she came out of it looking particularly good. Her life seemed to be like watching a trainwreck--horrible and yet you can't quite look away. What I did get from the movie was a very interesting set of performances, and I enjoyed those.
shareTo each their own, lasteven, but it does sound as if the movie "I, Tonya" took a more sympathetic viewpoint of her, which I don't have, despite the fact that her childhood was such a trainwreck. As I pointed out on another post, however, the real-life Tonya Harding herself will undoubtedly reap some money for this film, and I don't want any of my money going towards her.
shareVery uniquely done. I'm really enjoying it ATM!
