Overrated?
I know it's the most popular new show this season but does anyone else find it kind of schmaltzy and overrated?

Nope, it's perfect
I wouldn't say it's perfect (nothing is), but it is excellent. It and Legion are the best two shows on TV now imho.
It's not perfect, and it comes off a bit unrealistic in certain areas (in terms of how the characters are depicted and how they deal with certain situations, and and also how they act) but it certainly looks and feels more real than some of these other drama shows out there today. Here's a funny interview with Milo Ventimiglia about how playing the character Jack is affecting his life:

I agree. I watched the 1st episode and wondered if it was me that didn't understand the hoopla. Glad to see I'm not alone.

Yes, I do agree. I'm giving it a go and so far I am not very impressed. It seems typical networks version of a PC family, and beyond that, doesn't seem very nuanced or edgy. More cheesy.
I suppose, though, I'm looking more for a new "Six Feet Under".
But that was one of a kind and I have yet to find anything remotely like it.
Nothing that is this popular can be truly inventive and special. It's a Wal-Mart, a McDonald's, an Walgreen's of a TV show.

I kind of have to agree a bit now. As season two begins we discover:
Rebecca can still be a real bitch
Kate is still fat and somewhat dim
Kevin is still dim
Jack is absolutely the best person in this series, hands down
Now we know how Jack died. Sad.

"Now we know how Jack died."
Do we?
I binge watched season 1 and fell in love with it from the very first episode - and did this right before season 2. It was different - and drew me in (not many dramas can do that where I'll tune in each week).
Season 2 has been spotty - but so many shows go through this in their 'sophomore season'. Many of the eps so far seem like 'filler' with a bit of over-acting to catch the Emmy voters. I'm hoping when they come back from their winter break they will land on their feet once again.
I don't know. Whenever I hear slow, plinky piano background music and some dramatic sounding voiceover during the ads for a show, I know I will not enjoy one second of it, so I skip it.
