Can you purchase a precinct in America?

A tech billionaire (Justin Kirk) purchases a troubled police precinct in the wake of a loved one’s murder and brings cutting-edge technology to the police force....

Maybe it´s because i´m from Europe and don´t understand the sentence correctly, but can you actually buy a full working precinct in the U.S.A.? Or how does this work?

Probably set in the future when everything has been privatized. Or they just make up a wonky backstory to explain how he's doing it.

I have heard that a lot of people actually think it would be better to have all police forces become privatized rather than funded by the government, I suppose the idea is that it would eliminate a lot of the overspending, inefficiency, etc that always happens when the government has its hand in something. I don't know enough about it to know whether it's a good idea or not though.

reply

yeah and also end up prioritizing profits instead of helping people

just look at private jails, they treat the inmates awful

reply

Governments don't prioritize helping people either though lol

reply

yes but at least they dont have external motivation for profits since they get payed by taxpayers either way.

Sure, why not? Politicians can be bought. Judges can be bought. OJ bought a whole jury. Why not buy a precinct?

It is Chicago, you can buy a precinct but not a gun.

Wait a minute! This is Chicago? It's a gun free zone. Why do they even need cops? If guns aren't allowed there must not be any crime.

No you can not purchase but you can be civilian over site of a precinct. Then donate the upgraded equipment to the police.
It happens in small towns all the time. Car dealerships will donate cars to Police for Police cars and such. The federal government does this via grants.

So if the premise is that a Billionaire wants over site of a troubled precinct and then donates new upgraded equipment to them. Then that is very legal depending on the city's charter.

Even though this takes place in Chicago, this is based on TRUE STORY! A rich man bought the French District in New Orleans n crime went down. Tonight he said hes willing to do the same in Chicago for 3months free.

OP if you would have bothered reading the trivia you would know your answer. It's based on New Orleans sanitation magnate Sidney Torres and his formation of the French Quarter Task Force, a semi-privatized police force he created to deal with the rise of crime in his neighborhood after Hurricane Katrina.
