Can you purchase a precinct in America?

A tech billionaire (Justin Kirk) purchases a troubled police precinct in the wake of a loved one’s murder and brings cutting-edge technology to the police force....

Maybe it´s because i´m from Europe and don´t understand the sentence correctly, but can you actually buy a full working precinct in the U.S.A.? Or how does this work?

reply

I'm not sure what the full legal situation would be. I know there are not any privately run police districts currently. However, with prisons being privatized and some roads being privatized, I wouldn't rule anything out. Ah, America... where everything's for sale for the right price. :/

reply

I dont know if there are any completely run by private police, but there are plenty of private police out there with actual government authority.

reply

Yes my European friend. Everything is for sale in the USA. That is what makes it so great.
Donald Trump is a case in point.
Trump 2016!

Trump is human *beep* so no...

The premise is that the police precinct is troubled. So, a fully working precinct is assumed to be false. The answer would be "No" for a fully working precinct. What jurisdiction in its right mind would 'fix' what ain't broken?

We'll find out what is broken with this precinct. And the billionaire would have to satisfy, to some degree, the ruling jurisdiction such that other precincts aren't left behind by any advanced improvements made here.

Not legally, no. "Buying" police always involves corruption.

On top of this, you cannot "buy" one precinct, as the entire police force has the same jurisdiction.

You could hire people to investigate crimes, however, they would not have police authority.

Not having seen the show yet, I would say....it depends.

There are small towns and cities that can be bought. If this tech billionaire bought one, then yes, he would own the precinct. He could be mayor, police commissioner and anything else he wanted.

But, from the photos, this looks like a very large city. And precinct implies that it is one "station" among many police precincts in a large city.

In which case I'll still say....maybe.

It could be this is an experiment in outsourcing.

Just as public school districts can have a privately run public charter school, I suppose a city could have a privately run public police precinct.

Until I actually see the show and learn the premise my answer would be: maybe, depends.

It states Specifically in the end of the video that it's Chicago.

My problem is, come the *beep* on Hollywood, why does everything have to be Chicago, or NY? It's getting old! (Chicago med, chicago fire, chicago PD, Law & order SVU cross overs) and that's just the on going shows. Not even covering all the ones that are canceled.

The show looks pretty good, Almost like Almost human. But not as advanced. But It will be interesting to see how the show progresses. I wish I knew what channel it's going to be on. Because Fox or CBS is a death trap for shows like this.

Huh?

Los Angeles gets WAY more representation than Chicago does.

You named a bunch of SPIN-OFFS that have the SAME producer!

This is based on a guy in New Orleans who underwrote a semi-privatized police force to patrol the French Quarter in the wake of Katrina. He lasted about three months because he got bored and his own methods wasn't conducive to keeping people behind bars.

Your replies will be graded and possibly used as material in future projects.

reply

I give it three months -- tops -- before it's cancelled.

Have you ever seen the excellent movie that I highly recommend Kuffs (1992)? Same premise.

reply

Only a dozen or so times. Gotta love Milla Jovovich.

reply

It would be run better, hopefully.
