Just saw it. Good, but not great.
I'm honestly surprised how many critics are saying this is one of Scorsese's best films. He's my favorite director, but I thought while good this wasn't great. Performances were all great and you know it's going to be a great looking movie with Scorsese behind the camera, but for something that he claimed was such a personal project for him, I felt like it was lacking the heart of some of his other movies. I didn't feel like there was ever any real tension and even the emotional parts didn't hit as hard as I thought they should've. I don't normally mind long epic movies either, but you really did feel the length on this one. Probably would've worked better as a mini series. Also I won't go into spoilers, but I really hated what they did in the last 5 minutes and it completely took me out of the movie. It's probably the most self indulgent thing Scorsese has done in his entire career.
Like I said, it's still a good and very well made film, but after how much Marty talked about how passionate he was about adapting this story and all the glowing critical reviews, I feel a bit letdown. The Irishman and Silence were much better than this.
