I thought for sure Smith's character would have an audio recording of the corrupt cops (and other shit), but there was no payoff. I don't recall the device getting lost or destroyed. Did it play a bigger role in the script?

That actually would have been brilliant. I thought they got off very easily for having shot four cops. It was difficult to tell who was truly bad and good in this flick.

They got off easily because the official story was that they died in the gun fight, no one knew the real story.

If the higher ups write the story....... who does the tracing that they don't have influence over? Can't silence? Can't just change the paperwork to whatever they want it to say.
