I understand that this is a TV show, the chick has to be hot. But why does she have to be skinny? She looks like she has zero upper body strength. You can't play a sport professionally against grown men if all you have is "guts". I'd be more forgiving if they set the show in the low minor leagues.
I agree with you. It's odd casting because she's so small. I'm sure the whole premise is that she's got some gnarly change up and she's obviously not supposed to be any kind of power pitcher, but she is awfully slight. Someone built like Leslie Jones or Gwendolyn Christie would be more believable. Also, in the commercials her form doesn't look that good either. But who knows? Maybe it all comes together over the course of the pilot.
I know nothing about the plot of the pilot, but it could be that she's a knuckle-ball specialist with maybe a change-up thrown in. You don't need a lot of strength to throw knucklers, and if she's playing for an American League team, she won't have to bat. That scenario could be believable.
since when does pitching have anything to do with size? ever seen Tim Lincecum? Marcus Stroman? There's some skinny ass pitchers in the majors and small ones. in fact i've never even seen some crazy buff pitcher before, do you guys watch baseball?
Linecum is 170 pounds, Stroman is 180 pounds, and they are significantly smaller than the average pitcher (6'2" 210 lbs). Most MLB pitchers have really thick lower bodies, which help them to generate torque for their throwing motion.
Meanwhile, Pitch star Kylie Bunberry is 110 pounds soaking wet. It's just not feasible she could generate the kind of power men 1.5 to 2.5 times her weight can produce. IIRC, the fastest pitch ever thrown by a women is in the 70 mph range. The only way a woman could succeed as a pitcher in MLB is as a knuckleballer with perfect control.
LOL yeah, I've watched a game or two. The girl in Pitch is nowhere near as big as Lincecum or Stroman (as someone else pointed out already). If the girl was built more like Venus and Serena Williams, I'd be more inclined to let it slide. But she just looks like a skinny little thing.
I understand the show is not intended for baseball fans, but Fox did promote it during whatever I was watching, which may have been a baseball game, hence I came here to comment.
If you want to look up pitchers that can make it in this league that are skinny, look at a guy like Zach Davies from the Brewers. He's a skinny dude with skinny arms, looks like he's a teenager, and yet he's had a very good year. He sits around 88-90 mph regularly with his fastball, but can also throw a good changeup, curve, and decent slider -- so that probably helps him despite his size.
Then again, that's one example out of thousands over the years. And I have no idea how it compares with the woman in this series/what pitches she throws.
This show was a massive let down apart from her frame which I have to agree just seems completely wrong.. why one earth did she have the attitude like a megastar at the beginning I had an instant dislike for her and her agent, I mean they literally looked down their noses at people..including the viewer. As I was watching at every turn I felt I was being critical of something or rolling my eyes at the terrible personality stereotypes and clichés which is always a bad sign.. you just can't relax into it at all.. I love a good sports drama and this already feels like a wasted opportunity.
Brittany Viola, she's cute as hell, has the legs of a big leaguer and her father had a very successful pitching career. Unfortunately hollywood is terrified of strong athletic women.
