French soldier. Why?


What was the point of that? No back story and the character ends up doing nothing. So why bother making him French?

Lots of European immigrants had no choice but to join the army during the Indian Wars era due to lack of work opportunities. The last man to leave Custer's command with a message before the actual massacre began was an Italian bugler named Giovanni Martini, (AKA John Martin) who barely spoke any English.

It's called bad writing.

Another detail pushed into our faces but not paid off is the note Joe leaves for the black Sgt.

It just occurred to me that maybe the French actor was some producer's kid who needed a part to get his SAG card. His dad works for UNICEF, so there may even be a political connection.

LOL Chalamet was already 2017 the hot shit, definitely since Call me by your name, but I remember the praise for his role in Interstellar.
