Why wasn't the hacker arrested?

And why weren't the other anonymous hackers at least stopped by the police, they had no identity, and simply walked freely, doesn't seem very realistic, it's like someone would drive today without any licence plates for example...

Also each time the hacker got away, the police couldn't find her, it's like there were no surveillance cams anywhere, except in people's heads, so once she walked away, she was gone for good leaving no trace...

At first the policeman thought it was a simple glitch in the system.

there's a ton of holes in this system.... but it IS just a movie. There's tons of holes in EVERY MOVIE, always. No big thang.

reply

Well it's a big thing for me, and it bothers me because it doesn't make much sense. The girl comes to Sal, does her job, and then leaves and no one knows where she is... How is this even possible, couldn't the police at least follow her on foot to see where she lives? She was a murder suspect after all...

She then comes again for another job, a cop is killed and then disappears again without a trace. Why weren't other cops there, why aren't any surveillance cameras in the building or on the street, that could track her?

living inside THAT universe, some of that is answered, also some with narration: first, the whole premise is about HOW these people are NOT getting found and arrested. assuming (since they don't tell us) their communications from their inbuilt whatever CAN have glitches - like our cell phones - sometimes you DON'T get the insta-feed about who everyone is. System SEES someone, but gets no info from the google database so it tosses up error. Maybe happens randomly and often enough and after so so many false arrests due to a temp communication hiccup, the police have ceased nabbing everyone that has a temp gitch.

If she were followed, she'd know it from the feeds she intercepts - probably an alert system coded into hers (shes a hacker) and she'd launch a false live video feed and dissapear anyway.

There weren't other cops - they covered this in the dialogging - because she would notice the streams/broadcasts from them and stay away.
She'd erase any surveillance cameras in the vicinity.

The whole film is about the power she had over this system. I felt most of that was pretty tidy, but yes, it is just a movie and full of holes. One solution would have been physical: while standing close, snap hand cuffs on her to himself. BOOM! No amount of hacking would change that. Unless she HACKED her arm off with an axe. :D

I'm not defending the film really, but stretched like this, "IN TIME", even "GATTACA" require some leeway to entertain. :0

The movie's premise is that, because of the system, there are no longer any murders or even crime in society. That's because there's no personal privacy anymore and every second of everyone's life is recorded using their eyes (POV). The system allows police to instantly view any period of anyone's entire life they choose. So I surmised that the police have become completely reliant on the system and, over the years (decades?), have steadily lost their crime-solving and detective skills.

Again, over-reliance on the system seems to have caused complacency and softening of police skills. The cops literally don't seem to know how to do anything except use the system. And I suppose building and street surveillance cameras have become irrelevant and obsolete because everyone carries around their own cameras: their eyes.

If she can hack people, then it's a given that she's hacked the cameras.

I do agree that it's odd that hackers don't get stopped, but it seems as if the system has many glitches - when he saw her without ID, he passed it off as a glitch. Then again, I wonder if it's possible to buy 'unknown' ID in this world, much like you could buy unknown caller ID.

In current, non-scifi detective dramas, they would have done things like check DNA, and even determine where her apartment was located by triangulating the buildings in the window view that they saw.

reply

Yeah, exactly, it's like they didn't have any other technology besides the cameras inside the people's heads... What about interrogating witnesses, police sketches, fingerprints, DNA, etc.

reply

Why would you need any of that when you have a visual record taken directly through the eyes of the victim, perp, and witnesses? Fingerprinting, forensics, and sketch artists made obsolete.
