Shameful to recast Kevin Spacey!

I don't care about his scandals, you don't reshoot an entire movie when its finished.

Hopefully the DVD release will have Spacey's performance.

Shameful!

reply

Well you may not care but there are plenty of other people that would so that put them kind of in a no-win situation. Spacey was receiving such negative press that the movie would've likely been DOA had they left him in there. So it was either that or spend the millions on the rush job of having all his scenes reshot. They chose the latter.

I saw this over the weekend and didn't know at the time that Spacey's scenes had been reshot with Christopher Plummer. They pulled it off pretty seamlessly and considering how quickly they did all of that it was remarkable how good the film came out (I didn't love this movie but I thought Christopher Plummer was really good in the role).

reply

It's just not art. You don't paint over a painting once its finished.

reply

Well I suppose if you're the artist you can do whatever you want with it...whether you've made it better or worse will be subjective. I've only seen one small clip of Spacey in the role but can't say I was impressed with the make-up job so to me at least, it's possible that the film may have benefitted from the change. Either way my two cents would be that the film was good but not so much that it's worth getting mad about. Will probably be largely forgotten in a year.

"It's just not art. You don't paint over a painting once its finished. "

There are plenty of examples of paintings being painted over. Even some of the classics have other paintings hidden underneath.

Which character was Spacey supposed to play?

reply

He was not SUPPOSED to play a character, he DID play the character of the billionaire grandfather. When the scandal broke out, all his scenes were reshot with Christopher Plummer.

reply

No way! that's crazy..
anyway I thought Plummer played well.

reply

I for one am very glad that they replaced Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer - not because of what Kevin Spacey may or may not have done, but simply because the idiotic makeup would have been terribly distracting. Who is the idiot that thought that hiring a well-known actor and then making him unrecognisable by applying prosthetics and makeup would be a good idea?

reply

Apparently you haven' seen Gary Oldman yet, in " Darkest Hour " ! He is covered in prosthetics from head to toe, but believe it or not, it works ! He looks very natural !
I was amazed !

reply

Gary Oldman can do anything, though.

reply

Not at all. They should do this more often.

reply

I heard that Ridley Scott said he's not opposed to have both versions available on the blu ray... That could be interesting to check out...

reply

He's said the Spacey footage will not be released. It's a shame.

reply

More than often people can't separate the actor from the movie, can't invest in the film with the open knowledge that one of the actors is a pedophile or rapist.

Plummer was so awesome in this movie, it's hard to disagree with the recasting.

However, the armchair film historian in me wants to see the Spacey version.

One thing I noticed from the trailers with Spacey: Spacey was way younger than the character. The film portrayed the character over several decades, and Spacey played him in appropriate ages (via makeup/special effects). In the finished film, Plummer just looks 80+ years old over several decades. While they aged Spacey for the main film (where he's older), they didn't de-age Plummer for the few scenes of the younger Getty.

Maybe they just ran out of time. However, Plummer was so awesome, it hardly soils the film....
