According to the articles, Plummer was the first choice anyways, but the studio wanted a bigger marketable name.
I'll hold out and wait for the film to come out. Plummer could actually turn in a better performance, you never know. I won't lie when I say I'd be interested in seeing the Spacey version as well, but I have a hard time seeing Sony doing that. Ridley and Sony agreed to completely remove Spacey from all marketing material, so I doubt we'll get a "Spacey version" on Blu-Ray.
Yes I think there were supposed to be scenes with Guy Pearce playing young Weyland that were cut and also some promotional footage with young Weyland.
It does look kind of bizarre having a younger actor in old man make up for no apparent reason!
Max may have bought gravitas to the part.
LOL! Not quite. Saw it today, and Plummer is brilliant, chilling. He was Scott's first choice for the role. He's enjoying high praise from the critics, has already been nominated for a Golden Globe and is a top contender for an Oscar nom. I'd say the movie's done pretty by him, wouldn't you?
Solid performance... And there are lots of scenes with him! I thought it was going to be a tiny role, but it is quite substantial...
It'll be interesting to see if the blu-ray will have the Spacey version to compare... Especially now that Plummer has been nominated for the Oscar for this work...
Yeah - just saw the film, Palmer did an excellent job. I can see how Spacey could also work well here - he had that snobbish thing about him that he could nail in film quite easily. But Spacey is also much younger to be a grandfather figure, I'm thinking a lot of makeup was used to make him seem older - so, I'd say Palmer's age felt more right in this role - and again, acting-wise, he nailed this role.
Yes, he did an excellent job..I think he may have given a little warmth to a monstrous cold hearted man that Spacey may have missed..But, no doubt, Spacey would've worked too. And I wouldn't mind seeing his version (if it somehow still exists)..but I have no complaints with Plummer. He nailed it.
The most astonishing thing to me is all the scenes that had to be re-shot and replaced in such a short amount of time..I didn't realize that Getty has as many scenes as anyone else; even Michelle Williams as the daughter in law. If they can virtually reshoot a film in that short length of time then it really makes you wonder about other film makers taking so much time just to get out their original version ..
I've only seen Plummer in old guy roles so he fits better for me and he expressed JPG's tendencies perfectly. So, perfect choice for the movie IMHO.
While I would've picked Plummer for this role, I thought canning Spacey as separate matter was a douche move for the suits to no particular purpose. Maybe drop him from future consideration but when the movie was already done?
