Unnecessary
Just watch the 1987 version.
shareI'm big fan of the original. I saw the trailer last night and it doesn't look promising. It seems they are copying scene by scene of the original and going the play version with Kenny Ortega.
shareUnwatchable.
shareSeems to be okay if you never saw the original version.
shareYou have low standards. ;)
shareApparently the new one even did some things better!

Exactly, Hollywood has gotten so lazy, everything is either a sequel, remake or comic book stuff. Only underrated, lesser known films should be remade, classics need to be left alone.
First, let's not kid ourselves here: this thing is about as close to Hollywood as it is to Mars. It's a crappy tv movie, not a Hollywood film.
As for the rest, don't blame Hollywood. Blame social media. If Facebook, twitter and tumblr weren't exploding every time some crap like that is announced, just because they go "hey I know that! awesome!", giving studios the advertising they want, for free, they would stop the remake/reboot/prequel/sequel trend.
Nobody is going to go crazy on social media when they announce a movie made from a play or a book NOT written for teenagers, or an original script. That's why those are decreasing. They are replaced by free advertising by idiots who live by and for the hype.
And I don't necessarily agree on remakes. A great movie can be remade well and a good remake doesn't have to be redundant. They only feel unnecessary because they suck. If the studios wanted to do them well, they wouldn't do them in the first place. The idea here is to get maximum exposure with minimum effort.
I had to turn it off. The only thing I liked was the music.
shareTried to watch it for the first time a few months ago and I couldn't do it. None of the cast have any charisma and it seemed a pointless remake given how popular the original still is.
