what do you think the disaster was?

I think Yellowstone volcano might have been one cause?
or some nuclear or test going off close by to make all the power go out.
but an EMP would stop the cars going and the nice new one was OK in this so was not a big EMP.

The aurora being visible below the arctic circle, the electric grid failing and the magnetic compass going wild, point to a pole reversal event which can easily cause seismic and volcanic activity, since the magnetic field is caused by a rotation of the Earth's core.

Definitely a volcano. Probably Mt. Ranier. If it was Yellowstone the fallout zone would have been much greater.

Which doesn't account for the massive power disruption but does for the ash & pyroclastic flow at the end.

Didn't they say the disaster starter in Los Angeles? Then is completely destroyed to the West Coast and whatever happened affected the whole country. My money is on pole reversal.

reply

Could be. The immediate disaster was the volcanism. It would have to be a super-volcano, the nearest one is Yellowstone :

While I agree volcanoes on the west coast erupted due to whatever the "event" was, it couldn't have been Yellowstone because they drove directly through what would have been the "kill zone," meaning the whole area would have been decimated and inundated with pyroclastic flows.

Biggest clues were compasses going haywire, the auora borealis and the disoriented birds (they rely on the magnetic field.)

I thought it could be the eruption of Mt St Helen's volcano. They never said. Or where the origin of the disaster started. All we know is the entire west coast is gone. Maybe the San Andres Fault line finally gave and shifted the entire west coast from CA to Washington. Anyway. It was boring and a lot of stupid things occurred.
