Actually, Kelly Overton's acting ability as Vanessa Helsing is outstanding in this. She was inspired by Ripley in the movie Alien(s), which is a classic must watch. Overton plays it very real with the tension of the scenes. Have not seen the new Ghostbusters yet, that I believe is more on the lighter side, Van Helsing is not. It's has a brutal, heart pounding storyline that involves high stakes conflict.

Sigourney Weaver didn't run around the Nostromo telling everyone how awesome she was, she didn't beat up heavily muscled men twice her weight, and she didn't try to act like a man.
She was a regular woman doing a regular job who was put in extraordinary circumstances and was the sole survivor of her crew. That's why Alien is such a classic -- it's an understated film that knows the monster is that much more terrifying when we only see it in glimpses, and when the protagonists are regular people instead of invulnerable ninja superhumans.
In Van Helsing, SyFy has Overton preening, yelling "You want me? Here I am!" and striking ridiculous poses in a risible effort to look cool. The fact that this show takes itself seriously makes it unintentionally hilarious.
I don't think this is some feminist thing. I bet they will just use her sex appeal,that's probably the only reason the character is female. And Trump doesn't run Hollywood and never will. So simmer down...

I dont know why you are defending *beep* like this. This is token female stunt casting at its finest. Something syfy does at every turn these days. Women and minorities are all so happy to be seeing more women and minorits as leads that they ignore the fact they are being shoehorned into already established white male roles. Are you really so desperate that you wont demand originality? Are you reall going to celebrate that the entertainment industry has such little faith in women and minorities that they have to rid the coattails of popular white male characters?
The entertainment industry is lazy as *beep*. IT needs to stop. No more remakes, reboots and reimaginings. Time for originality and new characters. Ok I might be the only one here, but why couldn't the writers get with the guys who make the Zenoscope Comics and just use the Van Helsing they created and make a show out of it? Ugh...syfy has been going downhill fast and there is only a few shows I watch now, hell I dont even tune into the movie of the week anymore. I will say I am surprised they are finally ending Ghost Hunters which is far past its expiration date.
