Why give a female character the name “Michael”?

I am really puzzled by this. What is the idea behind it? To appear “feminist” somehow? Implying that a female character needs a male name to be strong sends exactly the opposite message. To challenge gender assumptions? If so, wouldn’t it be even better to call the male admiral “Jennifer” or something? To make the point that this is the future and that things change in time? But in all previous Star Trek series the men’s names have usually been quite traditional – James (Jim), Leonard, Montgomery, Jean-Luc, William, Wesley, Geordi (OK, not so traditional that one), Benjamin, Julian, Jake, Miles, Tom, Harry, Jonathan, Charles, Malcolm, Travis.

I really can't understand the logic.

why give yourself the onscreen name " JepGambardella"? is that some kind of SJW bs? you are all that's wrong with the left.

Posts like yours and people like yourself that take the time to attack someone because you think they are Leftists or something is beyond sickening. You disgust me, and your uselessness is an offense to the country and the world.

Thinking about this, it just sounds more command and military oriented. You cannot have someone being called Michelle in battle scenes on the bridge, I think they just did it for the sound.

And it only took until Episode 3 where a crew member on the USS Discovery actually says the name Michael for a female is unusual, unfortunately no explanation is given for the character receiving the odd name, I'm sure we'll find out more as the season progresses.

You said you're sure we'll find out more on why she was given that name. Did you?
I don't recall hearing an explanation at any point during the rest of the season.

I believe you might be overthinking it. I think it sounds cool and gives a futuristic feel to it. The same as an "asian" captain with a romanian name. Like everything is mixed up in the future. Probably a feministic take but the effect is pretty cool anyhow :)

Maybe put a post like this on actress Michael Michele's page and see what people think?

In other shows from the same producer, there have been female characters with traditionally male names.
