How can this be so completely horrible?

I am completely baffled at the BBC's making such a completely horrid, unsuccessful show like this. This is what I might expect from some cheap American Downton rip-off not the BBC. Jenna, bless her soul, is just not up to the role. She does not have the gravitas or grounding to pull it off. The various"downstairs" machinations are unbecoming and boring (staff stealing old candles and such to sell, planting rats to scare the Queen). That such things could go on with so many staff around and aware seems completely unrealistic and just added for shear sensationalism. There also seems little actual history included. Feels like a period soap opera and a bad one at that. The low budget is quite noticeable too. The music sounds to be stealing from both Downton and the Crown, so also unoriginal and boring. I would say this should and will be cancelled quickly but the current state of the world (Trump? Brexit?) seems completely upside down so who knows. If the Crown is steak au poivre (which it indeed is, completely fabulous) then Victoria is probably not fit to be feed the dog.

So don't watch it. I enjoyed it.

I enjoy the show, but I don't watch any other shows that are similar like The Crown or Downtown Abby. This is the only one that caught my eye so I guess they're doing something that people like. I particularly like the subplots of her servents lives. There are other shows if it does not tickle your fancy.

I wouldn't say completely horrible. It's somewhat horrible, but also somewhat enjoyable.

By contrast, Mercy Street is IMO completely horrible. 

I enjoyed it.
But certainly not the usual BBC high standard in terms of story telling.
I am a sucker for historical dramas though.

Please drop the term historical from your statement; this drivel is not in the least historical.

Really, what's up with all these negative comments? I enjoyed this show, and I look forward to the second season.

Just to add my penny's worth here... it does have its (many) flaws as a historical piece but as a piece of period dramatical entertainment, for me it does just that. I'm a bit of the history buff myself and all the inaccuracies don't boil my blood; rather I sit back and enjoy the crafted sets, the beautiful locations and let the (fictional) storylines that have been woven in to the factual do their thing. I have even grown used to the crazy blue contacts they've made Jenna Coleman wear and excuse the massive controversy-cum-best selling romancing of Queen Vicky and her Prime Minister. Rufus Sewell is always good to watch.
At the end of the day I'm a simple girl: I see costumes so I watch...and if it's got David Oakes in a fancy waistcoat, period garb, fantastic 'tash and stockings (historical costume: what else?) then all the better!
I'll probably watch it again and am looking forward to the next release.

Oh please. “Horrid” “Horrible” “not fit to be fed to a dog”. Sheesh, hyperbolize much?

Don’t watch it then. Hit the remote and watch some Real Housewives of Podunkville. Or some screeching kid sing an offtune Beyonce song to a panel of has-beens.

I’ll take a mediocre, historical costume drama any day over 98% of the other junk on TV. The budget doesn’t look low either. Not every show can be The Crown or season one of Downton or Game of Thrones or whatever other mega series floats the boat. I appreciate this show. It’s a cozy show, a weeknight tea n biscuit drama. Uneven, yes. Historically accurate, no but who cares. Everyone expecting history lessons should go read some books or watch documentaries.

Good post!
I don't really know what the OP expected, but I for one enjoyed this show.
