Weird Line?

After first speaking with Nathan (Nic Cage) about the meteorite/water situation, Ward (the hydrologist) asks if there's anyone else on the property who might be able to answer some additional questions for him. Nathan tells him about the squatter (Ezra) living nearby, but then oddly delivers the line: "But he might not speak to...'you'."

My initial impression was that Ezra was going to be some cranky old racist who wouldn't talk to Ward because he was black. Nathan goes on to simply say that Ezra is "special," which then led me to think he was mentally disabled.

As it turns out though, Ezra is just a friendly old stoner, totally welcoming and happy to talk to Ward. He clearly didn't notice (or care about) his skin color, and while he was somewhat "out-there," calling him "special" was kind of weird choice of words.

Anyone else find these lines by Cage to be strange? I'm not sure if the fault lies more in the writing or in Cage's delivery, but either way, I was left a bit puzzled.

It might've been a slight foreshadowing of the meteorite affecting his personality. He was talking normally but had a weird pause or word here or there before he fully went nuts. That, or it's just Nic Cage.

Good point. His performance throughout the movie was so bizarrely inconsistent that it was often difficult to discern whether the acting was intentional (to showcase the psychological effects of the meteorite) or, as you suggested, just Nic Cage.

I love that by the end of it, he was channeling his character from Kiss of a Vampire. He purposely did this, too, according to at least one interview. This is why I love Cage. He's not the best actor around but he's almost always entertaining.

Agreed about Cage. He's turned in a few genuinely good performances, but even when he's off his game, he's still usually a lot of fun to watch. I haven't seen Kiss of a Vampire though, I'll have to check it out.
