WHY was the auction silent?
never understood that part what was the need for sign language?
shareI was confused too.
Perhaps they didn't want Chris to figure out that he was being bartered for (wasn't he still rather close by and within possible earshot?). They said they were playing bingo and it would be weird to hear them doing an auction suddenly. Chris might come back and ask, out of natural interest, "What were you guys selling at this auction?"
However, right after saying this, I realized that playing bingo in complete silence is just as weird, as bingo should be full of talking, laughing and a very vocal host.
That was the best theory I had, and I'm still confused lol
Well if they didn't want Chris to figure it out if he wandered in then they probably shouldn't have had a blown up photo of him on an easel on the stage lol! I think it was Rose's job to keep Chris away from the auction site hence why she took him for a walk. As to why the auction was silent, beats me!
shareBesides the obvious dramatic effect of it being creepy as heck?
Perhaps the silence underscores the "secret shame" these people have about their racism. They're portrayed as rich liberal types, "enlightened" enough to see the benefits of being black while still generalizing as much as any racist KKK member.
They do it in silence so they won't have to face/hear the reality that they're engaged in an antebellum slave auction.
You and I are on the same page, but I think it was silent to keep the audience guessing what the heck they were actually doing.

It's creepier...?
shareI wondered why they were playing Bingo in silence and had a picture of Chris up on stage. Ironically your question has answered mine. It was an auction and I suppose they were keeping it quiet from Chris.
