Just saw Nosferatu, my review (NO Spoilers)
I snuck out of the office at 9:45AM to see the 10:00AM showing. I just finished seeing it
I think the movie is beautifully filmed: the actors all look authentically 1800s with their costumes, hairstyles, and facial hair. It reminded me of Ebeezer Scrooge or President Van Buren. I think the actors all nail an old-world accent while still sounding understandable (the film gives Nosferatu breathing issues to make him talk slower, which helps us understand him when he talks). The setting at various parts is beautiful yet atmospherically creepy. The plot, at times, is a little predictable; but in fairness, the film is a remake of a movie that tracks the universally-known Dracula. Thus, I give the film a pass there. The dialogue is well-written
The acting is great all-around. The lead actress (Lily-Rose Depp) does a fine job of being melancholic, insane, and innocent simultaneously (note: she does look like a malnourished Olive Oyl at first, but later, she gets nude; she's actually kinda hot). Nicholas Hoult, the lead actor from Juror #2, is serviceable as the cardboard-cut husband. William Dafoe shows up as the Van Helsing character in a seemingly subtle nod to his role as a vampire in "Shadow of the Vampire," which came out about 24-25 years ago. He is excellent . And Bill Skarsgard does a scary rendition of Nosferatu, though a small issue might be the mustache.
A major gripe might be the ending. As promised, I won't be giving spoilers. But the ending felt a bit anti-climatic and a little unsatisfying. The feeling was, "That's all it took to do it?" (again, I don't want to spoil anything by saying any more). I also think the movie could have cleaned up some of the threads involving the lead actress, her marriage, and her motivations. I'm still a little unsure about the opening scene, for example. The movie also contains 2 scenes that may go down as the most awkward sex scenes in cinema history
Still a good watch
