Wow it's gone downhill.

From the initial Godzilla reboot in 2014 to this...

It went from a kind of realistic mood, to flashy nonsense camp with all the human scenes seeming like mystery science theater.

Colors and effects are cool though.

I would agree that there has been a drop off from the first film--a movie which today is probably underrated--but I don't think it's been a steady slide. I'd probably rank them:

Godzilla
Godzilla vs Kong
Skull Island
King of Monsters

GvZ and Skull could potentially be flipped.

You're right though that, for one film, they decided to really take the story seriously. Now they're just having fun. I don't mind just having fun though.

Totally agree with you. The 2014 one made sense and was better written. I also liked the cast much better.

Contrary to PrimeMinisterX, I thought it just kept going downwards resulting with Godzilla vs Kong having that "Jurassic Park meets Stranger Things meets Star Trek" vibe. It was a weird mix and an unnecessary orgy of sci-fi special effects, in my opinion. I would have kept most of them for Godzilla, Kong and Mechagodzilla.

My personal ranking :
Godzilla (the best by a mile)
Skull Island (pretty good)
King of Monsters (started to have small things that annoyed me but still pretty good too)
Godzilla vs Kong (has some entertainment value but that's it. it's the worst one of the series)

The thing is that the 2014 GODZILLA was an attempt to make a Godzilla movie that would appeal to a general audience and GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS and GODZILLA VS KONG amount to Japanese kaiju films with mostly American casts and modern special effects. Which ones you prefer are a matter of taste.

Godzilla movies should be done in the time-honored Japanese tradition. 2014 Godzilla bored me. The next two were great. When I want a giant monster movie, I want to see that kind of film.

I'd have to disagree. Embracing the campiness actually elevated the movies. I was really hoping to like the 2014 film, I wanted to see a modern horror Godzilla movie where he was this eldritch-like unstoppable force. Instead we got a boring remake where Godzilla was barely in it (which would've been fine if he was the only monster) and instead focused on the forgettable Muto monters. None of the characters aside from Byran Cranston were likable. Thankfully, Shin Godzilla came out a 2 years later, and it satisfied me where Godzilla 2014 failed.

I think Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the best of the Legendary movies, followed by Godzilla vs Kong, then Kong: Skull Island, and finally, Godzilla 2014 at the bottom.

Godzilla was kind of a realistic mood? Do you believe in dinosaurs and or giant monsters?
