Amazing film. Only one (super minor) irk:

So, the three versions of the main character exist: Little, Chiron, and Black. Each of the individual chapters and performances stands alone and fits together brilliantly, and the performances were fantastic. My one irk, however, was that I just don't see that Chiron could have evolved into Black. I don't see how a lanky, slumped over, person like Chiron was in the middle chapter could physically transform into the way Black looked in the final porton of the film. I could see Little turning into either of the succeeding two chapters, but I had a hard time suspending disbelief for the second into the third. But, really, outside of that, the film was so affecting, so moving, and so well made (the constant repetition of the camera following behind the lead character's walk was a phenomenal touch) that it made it easy to look past what I thought was just a bit of inconsistency.

I took it as the actors who respectively portrayed Little, Chiron, and Black "represented" him, not so much that they "were" him. Especially in the case of Black.

I have to agree with the original post as my husband and I both found that we lost a bit of the thread of the story while trying to puzzle out who Black was since he didn't resemble Chiron.

Nah, I would just call this puberty lol. I have 3 brothers, all of which were either skinnier or chubbier than their current final form. Somewhere between 14-16, diet changed, they began working out everyday- playing sports, and now you'd never be able to tell how they used to look. This was just Chiron's glow up, especially as he seemed to be modeling himself after Juan who also had a muscular build, wore a do-rag etc.

The way I saw it was that he was a kid who gets put through the prison system, starting with juvenile because of the assault on the kid bullying him, who eventually became tougher and harder just in order to survive. It's another thing that goes toward this kid's environment leading to a lack of true identity as he has to create this outer shell when really inside he is the exact opposite.

Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

I felt the exact same way to be honest. On the other hand, the casting of the older version of Kevin was perfect.

You guys must have never seen Ryan Seacrest's transformation from boyhood to manhood?

I've seen some amazing transformations of people I went to highschool with. The ugly boy or ugly girl is drop dead gorgeous now or the hot girl or hot guy aren't so hot now.

At one of my jobs, we did the whole blast from the past thing, where everyone had to bring in pictures of their youth. There were several coworkers that made us go....wtf...is this the same person???? They looked completely different. I was even told I looked different from my childhood and teen pictures. Faces and bodies definitely change with some people.

i humbly disagree. my boyfriend pretty much looked like chiron when he was in highschool. hes shown me his old photos and told me how he used to get teased on at school till he had enough and focused on becoming a warrior. i honestly didnt believe it was him till he brothers confirmed. side note its a lot more easier for men of color to gain muscle and literally transform themselves. so for me it wasn;t hard buying it. only problem is that FACIALY they were definitely miscast cause black was all kinds of sexy.

reply

Definitely not "miscast". Look in his eyes.

It's all about the eyes, and Black was Chiron was Little.

Oh what a day! What a lovely day!

Really who cares if they don't look exactly alike, this happens all the time in movies. It is a movie you know. People get over it.
