I just don't get why people like the genre

I watched this movie and I still don't get why people like the genre'... utterly distasteful and distressing

Not every person has to like the same things, but not being able to understand why someone would like things you don't like tells me no amount of explaining would help you. I'll give it a shot, though.

You are not the epitome of taste. You are not the model of humanity others should strive to achieve. Other people exist, just as complex and completely formed as you. And some of them are vastly different than you. Start there. Once you grasp that, you're well on your way to guessing some of the "whys" (which are as different and varied as the people who's tastes baffle you).

If you still don't "get" it after that, come back and ask this instead: "I'm curious about the fans of this genre and would like to learn more about the appeal and how it effects people. Will anybody share their experiences with me?"

If you think that's what you already asked, think again. You basically wandered into a discussion about a film and told all the people who enjoyed it (or anything similar) that they are distasteful for liking it.

Movies are IQ tests; the IMDB boards are how people broadcast their score.

I think that it's perfectly natural, when you encounter something really not to your taste, to wonder "why do people like this?".

There are many different reasons why people like horror. Some people like the catharsis of experiencing something stressful but in an impersonal way (ie happening safely onscreen and not in your real life). Some people like the adrenaline thrill of being frightened (a la rollercoasters). Some people like the feeling of pushing their own limits of what they can handle seeing. Some people find over-the-top splatter to be funny.

The OP mentions that he's witnessed an actual death. I think that it makes sense that for someone who has personally encountered seeing murder it would be odd to think about other people enjoying watching murder (even if it's simulated murder). If I'd been in a serious car accident, it would probably alter my ability to enjoy action sequences that feature dangerous driving or car crashes. Every viewer has things that will be more upsetting to them or more funny to them or that will resonate more strongly with them.

The only thing I'd say to the OP is that everyone encounters art coming from a different place. What might seem gruesome or unbearably dark to one person might be humorous or cathartic or thrilling to another. When I see people skydiving, all I can do is shake my head and be like "Welp! I don't get it!". But them doing something that would be frightening or uncomfortable for me doesn't make them bad or wrong for doing it. Your personal experiences might just mean that movies with simulated deaths (and especially movies that use those deaths for humor) aren't for you.
