Can't understand why "accident" confuses everyone (SPOILERS)

I freaking loved this film, I've watched it through a couple of times now. One thing that has struck me the whole time was all the confusion and questions around the ACCIDENT segment.

To me, the segment was very, very clear. The guy was a serial killer. He saw a girl on a dark deserted road, ran her over, picked her up and had his fun via his "operation". The voices on the phone were simply the voices in his head telling him what to do with her to entertain himself, and eventually, how to flee the scene. If you watch carefully, even when he has removed his headset towards the end he can still hear the laughter.

When he drives away in his new wheels, he passes a diner with a clear sign that says "TRAP" right in the middle. The whole film is about characters being trapped by their misdeeds.

Nothing at all even implied as such. The fact that he mad a conscious effort to save her when he simply could have driven away says otherwise. He was tricked into killing her.

How in the blue blazes do you come up with "he's a serial killer." Why would he take her to a hospital if he's trying to kill her?

If the voices were meant to be in his head it would have been more clear if he didn't have to use his phone to hear them.

The accident was clearly "an accident." no part implied it was on purpose.

I almost feel like this is a subtle troll cut it really bothers me someone is so off the mark on this.

whom did it confuse? clearly not everyone.

can't say i favor an interpretation of good as bad.

reply

I agree that the whole film was about people being trapped by their misdeeds/in some sort of purgatory.

In my view, this guy did the "town" a favor accidentally, so they *beep* with him to some extent, but let him go since he not only killed her but brought her into town for them. The new car and clothes was a reward.

That's my opinion, but I may be taking it too literally. What I think supports my literal interpretation is the woman talking to him on the phone is seen at the end of the segment guiding him to bring the girl back.

reply

Yeah, I definitely agree. He seems to be the only person who gets out unscathed.

I'm not trying to offend you but I must say, that is a stupid take away and CLEARLY wrong! Sorry....

I can see this theory has sparked some debate. I'm happy for arguments against the theory (with the exception of the usual trolls spilling toxic rubbish and calling me dumb etc - stay in your little holes by all means and let the adults talk). I'd be happy to concede that I'm completely wrong.. provided that someone can explain:

1. Why the guy can hear the voices laughing at him, even though he doesn't have his phone or headphones on.

2. Why the voices are laughing at him to begin with

3. Why there is a fully stocked hospital complete with electricity completely abandoned

4. Why, after she dies, Lucas picks up the phone when his wife is ringing, only to find that he can still only hear the voices on the phone.

5. Why the voices tell him to leave, as opposed to staying where he is, which would be the normal thing to do.

Does he hear them when he's out of range of the phone at any point? I remember he drops the phone and hears the laughter (which is possible in a silent room) but I don't know if he hears it when he's out of range.

Cuz it's the forces of purgatory and they're giving him a test. Supernatural stuff.

Supernatural.

Because he passed his test and was not condemned to purgatory.

You explain to me why 1) If he killed her on purpose, why is his car new when he leaves 2) If the voices are in his head, why do we see one of the women on the phone afterwards?

I'm sorry not sorry but you are completely wrong. There is no E evidence to suggest your "theory". I honestly think you want this film to be deeper than it is. The film isn't clever enough to do that. Also, it's not a debate when one party is completely wrong.

reply

I don't think so. I thought Raymond was just some passerby who happened to be there at the right time. A few clips before he hit Sadie you could see that her demon was about to finish her off but Raymond hit her instead. At this point Sadie was still alive so the demon's had Raymond finish her off in that sick hospital scene. Even though he did hit her , he didn't just drive away. He tried to save her. What was surprising was even demons could be reasoned with. They actually let him go after.

Clearly your the only one that is confused. Your serial killer theory is completely idiotic, and if you can't see that by now, I recommend you stick to movies like the Mighty Ducks. Those type of movies won't confuse you, and even if they do, no one will care about your far off interpretation. Good luck on your GED exam mate.

I know right, I can't imagine how he feels right now, he should just delete this board right away. His pretentious being made me went here in the first place. No offense, though.
