Yes, I thought at the time, who the hell was that old white woman in a wheel chair the actresses brought up onto the stage ?
African-Americans come in many shades thanks to slave owners visiting the slave quarters if you know what I mean. She was subject to the same Jim Crow laws in Virginia as other African-American women.
BTW, she's 100 years old.
I've read that she would have possibly passed as white but chose not to.
